16 Handles grows 40% in 2024 by positioning frozen yogurt as protein vehicle, per Modern Retail

The chain frames self-serve fro-yo as customizable wellness — and lets TikTok document the toppings.

16 Handles opened 40 new locations in 2024, according to Modern Retail, reversing a decade of category decline by treating frozen yogurt as a macro-friendly snack instead of a dessert splurge. The New York-based chain stopped defending frozen yogurt against ice cream and started selling it as yogurt that happens to be frozen — high protein, lower sugar, infinitely customizable. Younger consumers, raised on protein shakes and tracking apps, bought in. So did franchisees.

The mechanics: 16 Handles runs 14-16 grams of protein per serving as a lead stat, positions Greek yogurt bases as the default, and merchandises toppings as functional add-ons — granola for texture, fruit for micronutrients, a drizzle for dopamine. Stores display calorie and macro breakdowns at the flavor lever. Customers self-serve, weigh at checkout, and post the build on TikTok. The brand does not pay for the posts. The format — transparent nutrition, visible customization, shareable result — generates its own content.

Why it works: Frozen yogurt died in the 2010s because it competed with premium ice cream on indulgence and lost. 16 Handles reframed the category by borrowing the wellness language of smoothie bowls and protein bars. The self-serve model becomes proof of personalization, not a gimmick. A 22-year-old building a post-gym snack with 130 calories of base, 8 grams of protein from toppings, and one controlled sugar hit is solving a different problem than someone buying a pint of Häagen-Dazs. The format lets her show the work. Modern Retail notes that younger consumers treat frozen yogurt as "a permissible treat that aligns with wellness goals," and the self-documentation — weighing the cup, displaying the macros, filming the swirl — turns compliance into content. The brand benefits twice: once from the sale, once from the organic reach.

Go Greek, a comparable chain, reported similar momentum. Both brands grew while legacy frozen yogurt operators continued closing. The difference is messaging discipline. 16 Handles does not claim frozen yogurt is healthy. It claims frozen yogurt is *controllable* — you see the base stats, you choose the add-ons, you own the outcome. That narrative works in an era when consumers track everything and trust nothing pre-packaged.

The steal for a small physical-product brand: Take the macro you already print on the label and move it to the front of every product shot. If you sell protein bars, lead with 12g protein, 4g net carbs in the hero image, not the flavor name. If you sell trail mix, call out the single-serving pouch and the gram weight per nutrient. Show the customer doing the math, not you doing the selling. Then make the product easy to photograph in use: clean label facing forward, visible portion, simple background. A customer posting their snack with the nutrition panel visible is an endorsement and a cite. You do not need a self-serve dispenser. You need a product that rewards documentation.

For organic reach, add one structural nudge: print a QR code on the inside of the package that links to a macro calculator or a serving-size guide. The customer who scans it is already engaged. The customer who screenshots the result and shares it is your next post. 16 Handles did not invent this. They just stopped apologizing for frozen yogurt and started letting the format speak. A product that makes the user look competent will always outperform a product that makes the brand look clever.

The broader pattern: Wellness wins in physical product are about proof systems, not health claims. The customer wants to show the work, not take your word. If your packaging, format, or ritual makes that easier, the content follows. If it does not, you are still selling in a world that moved on.

The takeaway
Lead with the controllable stat, make the product easy to document in use, let the customer show the work.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
