1MORE Claims 'New Standard' in Open-Ear Audio, Uses Launch Packaging to Own Category Definition

Hardware brand skips feature lists, declares the S20 Ultra a benchmark before competitors frame the segment.

1MORE released the S20 Ultra clip-on earbuds in September 2026 and positioned the product as "a new all-around standard for open-ear audio," according to PRNewswire. The company did not wait for reviewers or retailers to define what open-ear audio should be. It wrote the definition into the launch language itself.

The move matters because the open-ear category is still forming. Shoppers searching for open-ear earbuds face a scattered field of brands using inconsistent terminology: bone conduction, air conduction, clip-on, ear hook. 1MORE declared the S20 Ultra the standard before any consensus emerged. The press release emphasized "advanced acoustic architecture, all-day comfort, intelligent features, and versatile performance" as the core attributes of the category, then positioned the S20 Ultra as the reference product embodying all four.

This is category-definition packaging. The brand is not claiming the S20 Ultra is better than competitors. It is claiming the S20 Ultra defines what the category measures. When a brand names the dimensions of comparison, it shapes how every product that follows gets evaluated. If "all-day comfort" becomes a known standard for open-ear audio, every competitor must address it. If "advanced acoustic architecture" becomes table stakes, other brands must explain their version or risk looking incomplete.

The mechanism works because shoppers in emerging categories lack comparison frameworks. They do not yet know what matters. A brand that names the criteria first becomes the implicit benchmark. The S20 Ultra may not be the first clip-on earbud, but by declaring itself the standard, 1MORE gives retailers, reviewers, and buyers a reference point. Competitors will now be measured against the S20 Ultra's framing, not their own.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play when entering a forming or fragmented category. First, identify three to five attributes that your product delivers well and that matter to the use case. Write them as nouns, not adjectives: durability, portability, modularity. Then draft launch copy that positions your product as "setting the standard" or "defining the category" around those attributes. Use phrases like "the new benchmark for [category]" or "what [category] should be." Place this language in the product title, the first line of the listing, and the opening sentence of any press release or pitch.

Second, repeat the same attribute list in every channel: website hero copy, Amazon bullet points, email to early customers, pitch to trade press. Consistency makes the framing stick. If you say "portability, durability, modularity" five times in five places, buyers start to believe those are the three things that define the category. Third, avoid comparing your product to named competitors. Comparison implies you are downstream of their standard. Instead, describe your product as the reference and let competitors compare themselves to you.

This costs nothing beyond disciplined copywriting. You are not buying media or hiring agencies. You are choosing the frame before the market does. The risk is low: if the framing fails, you adjust. But if it holds, you own the vocabulary the category uses to evaluate itself. That is worth more than any single feature.

The takeaway
1MORE declared the S20 Ultra the open-ear audio standard before the category defined itself, owning the evaluation criteria.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
