Bath & Body Works Lands All 1,385 Ulta Stores This Holiday After Pilot Win

The candle giant turned a small beauty-channel test into full-fleet distribution in six months.

Bath & Body Works moved into all Ulta Beauty store locations this holiday season after a limited pilot earlier in the year, according to Retail Dive. The expansion brings the home fragrance brand into 1,385 Ulta stores nationwide, placing scented candles and body care alongside prestige cosmetics in one of the fastest-growing beauty retail environments in the country.

The move followed a smaller test that Bath & Body Works ran with Ulta earlier in 2024. The brand placed a curated assortment in select Ulta doors, measured traffic and basket attachment, and evidently saw enough lift to justify full rollout before the critical fourth quarter. Ulta's customer base skews heavily female, college-educated, and willing to spend on personal care, a demographic that already buys heavily from Bath & Body Works but typically does so in malls or standalone stores. The co-retail play puts the product in a new shopping context where the customer is already primed to browse and add impulse items.

Why it worked comes down to channel arbitrage and basket economics. Bath & Body Works sells consumable fragrance. Ulta sells consumable beauty. Both rely on frequent repeat visits and both benefit when a customer who came in for one category leaves with two. The brand did not need to convince Ulta to carry a new product type; home fragrance and body care already fit the store's wellness and self-care merchandising narrative. What Bath & Body Works offered was a recognized name with high turn rates and a product that does not compete directly with Ulta's core prestige makeup and skincare assortment. For Ulta, the partnership adds a traffic driver and a margin-accretive category. For Bath & Body Works, it adds several million incremental shopping occasions per quarter without opening a single new lease.

The steal for a small physical-product brand is to pilot your product inside someone else's fleet before you try to build your own. Identify a retail partner whose customer already buys something adjacent to your product but not identical. Approach the buyer with a test proposal: a small assortment, a defined period, shared sell-through data. Offer to handle the initial inventory risk and to pull product if it does not move. Make the test easy to say yes to. If the pilot works, the retailer will expand you themselves because you are now a proven incremental margin line. A candle brand might test in yoga studios. A snack brand might test in coffee chains. A tool brand might test in coworking spaces. The cost is the sample inventory and the time to service the pilot. The return is distribution you could not afford to buy outright.

Bath & Body Works did not reinvent its product or rebrand for Ulta. It placed the same candles in a new location and let the traffic do the work. The lesson is that distribution innovation often beats product innovation for near-term revenue growth, especially when the product already has pull.

The takeaway
Pilot your product in someone else's store where the customer already shops for something related but not competing.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
