Best Buy Built Ray-Ban Meta Shop-In-Shops and Trained Staff to Demo AI Products, Redesigning 50+ Stores Into Experience Centers

The retailer proved physical stores drive AI product sales when customers can touch, try, and ask questions on the floor.

Best Buy converted more than 50 retail locations into hands-on AI demonstration centers by building dedicated Ray-Ban Meta shop-in-shops and retraining floor staff to explain wearable AI, according to Modern Retail. The redesign addresses a core friction in selling AI hardware: customers do not buy what they cannot try, and AI features require human explanation to convert.

The retailer installed permanent Ray-Ban Meta fixtures inside stores, complete with mirrors, charging stations, and demo units loaded with live software. Staff received multi-week training on the glasses' AI capabilities—photo capture, real-time translation, hands-free calling—so they could answer questions and walk shoppers through use cases on the spot. Best Buy treats these shop-in-shops as flexible modules, able to swap in new AI products as the category evolves.

The mechanism works because AI wearables solve problems customers do not yet know they have. A shopper browsing headphones does not intuitively understand why a pair of glasses with a camera and voice assistant matters until someone shows them a live translation or hands-free photo capture. The shop-in-shop creates a low-pressure zone where staff can demonstrate the product in context, answer objections, and let the customer handle the hardware. Best Buy's training program ensures consistency: every associate in a flagship location can explain the same three to five killer features, reducing the risk that a customer walks out confused.

The broader strategy scales because Best Buy owns the real estate and already pays the staff. The marginal cost of a shop-in-shop is the fixture build and the training hours, not rent or headcount. The company can test new AI products—smart rings, AR glasses, voice assistants—in the same format, rotating inventory as the category matures. The model works for any physical product where the value proposition requires demonstration, especially electronics, fitness wearables, or kitchen tools with hidden features.

A small brand selling a physical product with a non-obvious benefit runs the same play on a tighter budget. Identify three to five retail partners with floor staff who already talk to customers—local running stores, outdoor shops, kitchen supply retailers. Offer to build a countertop display and run a two-hour in-person or virtual training session for staff, walking them through the product's top use cases and the five questions customers always ask. Provide a one-page cheat sheet with answers and a QR code linking to a demo video. Offer the retailer a 10% rebate on first-month sales from the display to cover the shelf space. Track conversions by location and double down on the stores where staff actually use the training.

The pattern holds across categories: products that require explanation sell better when the explainer is trained, present, and has a reason to care. Best Buy built the infrastructure at scale. A one-person brand builds it one countertop at a time.

The takeaway
AI wearables need live demos and trained staff to convert; Best Buy proved the model at scale with shop-in-shops.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
