Messi's Mas+ and Alex Cooper's Unwell shut down as celebrity-led CPG hits saturation

High launch buzz no longer converts to repeat purchase or retail shelf life in physical product categories.

Mas+, the hydration brand backed by soccer player Lionel Messi, and Unwell, the wellness line launched by podcast host Alex Cooper, have both shut down operations, according to Modern Retail. The closures mark the latest failures in a wave of celebrity-backed consumer packaged goods that generated initial publicity but could not sustain distribution or convert one-time buyers into repeat customers.

Both brands followed the standard playbook: secure a recognizable name, launch with social media fanfare, place product in a narrow channel set, and wait for the audience to follow. Mas+ positioned as a functional hydration play in a category crowded by Liquid I.V., Gatorade, and Prime. Unwell entered wellness supplements, where shelf space is expensive and trust takes years to build. Neither secured the repeat purchase velocity required to justify retailer floor space or direct-to-consumer fulfillment costs.

The mechanism of failure is structural, not promotional. Celebrity attachment drives awareness and a curiosity purchase. It does not create habit. A customer buys once because the name is familiar. She repurchases because the product solves a problem better than the alternative she already uses. In hydration and wellness, incumbents have spent decades on formulation, taste testing, and distribution relationships. A new entrant needs a product advantage sharp enough to dislodge that inertia. Fame alone does not qualify.

Retailers now discount celebrity launches in their buy decisions. According to Modern Retail, buyers have seen enough celebrity-backed lines fail to clear inventory that they treat launch buzz as a liability, not an asset. Initial sell-through peaks in week one, then falls. The brand demands marketing support and slotting fees but cannot deliver sustained velocity. Shelf space goes back to proven SKUs.

The steal for a small physical-product brand is to inverse the celebrity playbook. Start with a product that solves a specific, repeatable problem for a narrow customer segment. Prove repeat purchase with 100 customers before attempting retail placement. Build the brand story around the problem and the solution, not the founder's follower count. If you have a recognizable name, use it to accelerate distribution after product-market fit is proven, not as a substitute for it.

Document your repeat rate in the first 90 days. If fewer than 25% of customers reorder without a discount, the product is not ready for retail. Focus on the use case, the format, and the margin structure that makes the second purchase automatic. Celebrity brands failed because they inverted this sequence. You will win by running it in the correct order.

The takeaway
Celebrity buzz drives one purchase; product solves the problem that drives the second.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
