Dollar Shave Club Acquires Truly Beauty, Keeps Both Brands Separate to Double Reach

The dual-brand playbook lets you serve two customer segments without diluting either identity.

Dollar Shave Club acquired body care brand Truly Beauty and made the uncommon choice to keep both brands operationally separate, according to Retail Dive. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the strategic logic is clear: Truly Beauty serves a different customer base, and folding it into the parent brand would eliminate that reach.

The mechanics are straightforward. Dollar Shave Club owns the entity, funds the operations, and likely shares back-end logistics and fulfillment infrastructure. But the customer-facing assets remain distinct. Truly Beauty keeps its name, its positioning, its visual identity, and its own social channels. A shopper buying from Truly Beauty may never know Dollar Shave Club is the acquirer. That separation is the point.

The reason this works is segmentation integrity. Dollar Shave Club built its brand on convenience and value for men's grooming. Truly Beauty targets body care buyers, predominantly women, focused on skin health and natural formulations. Merging the two would force one audience to accept a brand voice built for the other. Instead, each brand continues to speak directly to its segment without compromise. The acquirer gains revenue diversification and cross-sell optionality without alienating either base.

The broader pattern here is the house-of-brands model, common in CPG but underused by smaller physical-product companies. Procter & Gamble does not sell Tide under the Crest logo. Unilever keeps Dove separate from Axe. The brands share warehouses and negotiating power with contract manufacturers, but they do not share customer perception. Dollar Shave Club is running the same architecture at a smaller scale.

For a physical-product brand looking to expand without confusing its core audience, the steal is this: when you add a new product line that serves a materially different customer, launch it under a new brand name. Keep the logos separate. Run distinct social accounts. Write different email copy. Share the Shopify backend, the 3PL, the freight forwarder, but let each brand own its positioning. The operational cost is minimal. You are already paying for fulfillment. Adding a second brand name to your shipments costs nothing. The customer benefit is high. A buyer who wants the new product but does not relate to your existing brand can now purchase without cognitive dissonance.

Start with the product. If you are a supplement brand selling to athletes and you develop a sleep aid for desk workers, do not force the athlete brand to carry it. Register a new DBA, buy a new domain for $12, build a separate Shopify storefront on the same backend for no additional transaction fee, and write new landing page copy that speaks to the sleep-deprived office worker. Route orders to the same 3PL. Your per-unit pick and pack fee does not change. Your shipping rates stay the same. But now you have two brands with two clear messages and two customer files you can grow independently.

The test is simple. If your existing brand's Instagram followers would scroll past the new product because it does not fit their identity, you need a new brand. If they would buy it naturally, keep it under the same roof. Dollar Shave Club understood that a man buying razors on subscription is not the same buyer browsing body care for skin health, so they protected both.

The next move is to map your product pipeline against your current brand's core customer identity. If any planned SKU serves a different job or a different persona, set it up as a separate brand now, before launch, and avoid the repositioning cost later.

The takeaway
When a new product serves a different customer, launch it under a new brand name and share only the back-end infrastructure.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
