Dollar Tree and Dollar General steal 4-7% traffic share as shoppers trade down to value shelves

Brands treating discount channels as dumping grounds leave margin on the table while premium SKUs quietly win shelf space.

Dollar Tree reported a 4.5% comparable-store sales increase in Q2, while Dollar General posted 0.5% comp growth, both gaining traffic from mass retailers as American households stretched budgets, according to Retail Dive. The pattern marks the first sustained traffic shift to dollar channels since 2021, driven by households earning above $60,000 annually — a demographic that historically avoided these stores.

Both retailers expanded their $3-$5 product sets, creating shelf space for brands willing to engineer SKUs specifically for the channel. Dollar Tree's Family Dollar banner added 1,200 new consumable items in Q2 alone, most of them name-brand products reformulated to hit the $1.25 price point without looking like a markdown. Dollar General expanded cooler space by 18% across 8,500 stores, prioritizing brands that could deliver margin at the $3.99 threshold.

The mechanism is channel-specific product architecture, not cheapening. Brands that win these placements engineer a SKU from scratch — different pack size, different formulation, different cost structure — so the product feels native to the value channel rather than a closeout. A 16-ounce candle at Target becomes a 6-ounce candle at Dollar Tree, same wax, same scent profile, different vessel and wick count. A 12-pack of protein bars at Whole Foods becomes a 3-pack at Dollar General, same bar, different carton. The shopper perceives value parity, not compromise.

This is the opposite of how most physical-product brands approach discount channels. They dump overstock, previous-season inventory, or visibly downgraded versions that train customers to wait for the markdown. Dollar stores now refuse those plays. Their buyers want SKUs that carry no stigma, no "I bought this at the dollar store" tell. They want products a $75,000-income household will restock without shame.

The steal for a small brand is to design a second SKU specifically for value retail, not to force your primary SKU into a channel that cannot bear its price. A candle brand selling 12-ounce jars at $28 on Shopify does not belong in Dollar General. A 4-ounce tin at $5 wholesale does. A skincare brand with a $42 serum cannot cut it to $12 without destroying perceived quality. A 0.5-ounce rollerball at $5.99 retail can. You are not cheapening the brand; you are building a parallel product line that earns its place on a different shelf.

Start by reverse-engineering the retail price. Dollar Tree operates on $1.25 or $3/$5 tiers. Dollar General works in $1/$3/$5/$10 bands. Pick your lane, subtract 50% for wholesale, subtract your landed cost, and see what product you can build in the margin. If the math does not work, the channel is not for you. If it does, prototype the SKU, shoot the packaging, and cold-email regional buyers with a sell sheet showing the comp set already on their shelves. These buyers move fast when the unit economics are clean.

The broader pattern is that value retail is no longer distressed inventory's graveyard. It is a deliberate channel with deliberate assortment strategy, and brands that treat it as such gain access to 35,000+ doors neither Whole Foods nor Target will ever give them. The trade-down is structural. The opportunity is in meeting it with product purpose-built for the mission, not leftovers dressed up as value.

The takeaway
Design a SKU for the dollar channel, not a markdown — reverse-engineer from retail price, land the wholesale margin, pitch the buyer.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
