Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi Now Require Emerging Designers to Prove DTC Revenue Before Wholesale Placement

Luxury buyers want repeat purchase data and owned customer lists, not just Instagram followers or press clips.

In plain words

Luxury buyers now gate wholesale on DTC proof: show them repeat purchase data and owned lists before you ask for placement.

200 to 500
email subscribers who have either purchased or explicitly opted…
50 full-price purchases
across two or three product drops over six months
15 to 20 percent
of buyers returning within 90 days
$800
on Instagram ads and acquire

Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi have stopped placing orders on look-books alone. According to Business of Fashion, both retailers now require emerging designers to demonstrate direct-to-consumer traction—owned customer lists, repeat purchase rates, and proof that people buy at full price—before they will offer wholesale placement. The shift marks the end of the discovery-driven wholesale model and the start of a proof-first gate.

The mechanics are straightforward. Buyers ask for customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, and email list size during the first conversation. They want to see Shopify dashboards or equivalent backend data showing that the brand can acquire and retain customers without the retailer's help. One buyer told Business of Fashion she declines brands with strong Instagram engagement but no history of converting followers into paying customers. Another said she will not consider a designer who has never run their own checkout.

The underlying reason is risk transfer. Wholesale used to be the discovery channel: retailers took the inventory risk and introduced customers to new names. That model broke when too many emerging brands failed to sell through, leaving buyers with markdown pressure and margin erosion. Now the retailer wants proof the brand has already figured out product-market fit, customer acquisition, and retention before the retailer commits floor space or digital real estate. The designer absorbs the early-stage risk. The retailer enters only after the brand demonstrates repeatable demand.

A small physical-product brand selling apparel, accessories, or home goods can run the same play to make wholesale-ready proof before approaching a buyer. Start by building a list of 200 to 500 email subscribers who have either purchased or explicitly opted in. Use a lead magnet—a sizing guide PDF, a fabric care booklet, or early access to a pre-order—to collect emails on your own domain. Send a weekly or biweekly email with product stories, behind-the-scenes content, or restocks. Track open rates and click-through in your email platform.

Next, convert that list into at least 50 full-price purchases across two or three product drops over six months. Run each drop as a timed release with a specific launch email, a 48-hour early-access window for the list, and a follow-up email three days later for anyone who did not buy. Measure repeat purchase rate: aim for 15 to 20 percent of buyers returning within 90 days. Document the CAC for each cohort using your ad spend and email tool cost divided by new customers acquired. If you spend $800 on Instagram ads and acquire 40 customers, your CAC is $20. If those customers buy again, calculate LTV as average order value times purchase frequency. Export this data into a one-page PDF with clean charts.

When you approach a buyer, lead with the numbers: list size, repeat rate, CAC, LTV. Attach the PDF and offer to share read-only Shopify analytics or Klaviyo reports. The buyer can see you have already de-risked the brand and proven you can move product without their distribution. You are now a portfolio candidate, not a gamble.

The broader pattern holds across categories. Wholesale is no longer a launch strategy. It is a scale strategy that follows proof. Build owned demand first, measure it clearly, and bring the data when you want someone else to carry your inventory.

For the principal

Build a 200-email list and convert 50 full-price sales with documented repeat rate before approaching any wholesale buyer.

For the operator

Package CAC, LTV, and cohort retention into a one-page PDF and lead every wholesale pitch with the numbers, not the product story.

For the house

Require backend access or a retention PDF from any emerging brand pitch—Instagram follower count is not a risk signal you can underwrite.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
