Jameson locks NFL global sponsorship while spirits volume drops — betting sports drives trial at scale

Category down, but the brand banks on game-day occasions to rebuild frequency and pull lapsed drinkers back in.

Jameson signed as the official Irish whiskey of the NFL this month, according to Marketing Dive, committing to a multi-year global partnership while the broader spirits category contracts. U.S. spirits volume fell 1.2% in 2024, the first decline in a generation, and Irish whiskey shipments specifically dropped 3.8% year-over-year. Jameson's parent, Pernod Ricard, reported its own net sales down 4.8% in the six months ending December. The brand is moving into sports at the exact moment the category is shrinking.

The deal puts Jameson into every NFL market globally, including international games in London, Munich, and São Paulo. The brand will activate at the draft, playoffs, and Super Bowl, with in-stadium presence and broadcast integrations. Pernod Ricard's North America CEO told Marketing Dive the play is designed to "create new consumption occasions" and "engage a broader, younger audience." The mechanism is straightforward: attach the product to a recurring, high-emotion ritual that happens 17 weeks a year plus postseason, and let frequency compound.

This works because sports sponsorships convert lapsed users and trial seekers better than awareness campaigns in a contracting category. When volume is falling, brands cannot afford to chase new drinkers who do not exist. They need to reactivate people who already know the product but stopped buying. The NFL delivers 18 million viewers per regular-season game, and nearly half of U.S. adults watch at least one game per season. Jameson is not trying to teach whiskey to non-drinkers. It is trying to make existing whiskey drinkers think "Jameson and the game" instead of "beer and the game." The occasion substitution is the revenue driver, not brand awareness.

The steal for a small physical-product brand: identify the recurring ritual your customer already has, then make your product the *accessory* to that ritual. Do not invent a new occasion. Hijack an existing one. If you sell candles, do not ask someone to "create a self-care evening." Ask them to light your candle every time they open their laptop for morning email. If you sell hot sauce, do not ask them to cook differently. Ask them to put it on the scrambled eggs they already make. If you sell journals, do not ask them to start journaling. Ask them to keep it next to the coffee maker and write three lines before their first sip. Pick a behavior with weekly or daily frequency, then make your product the cue or the reward. Jameson picked Sunday football. You pick the thing your customer does without thinking, and you make your product part of the script. Cost: zero. You rewrite the product description, the email sequence, and the unboxing insert to anchor the product to the existing habit. Frequency follows.

The takeaway
Attach your product to a ritual the customer already has, not one you want them to start.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
