MagBak, Neon Growth, and Marpipe Ship First Enhanced Image Ads on Google Shopping

Three brands exploited a new placement format before competitors knew it existed.

MagBak, Neon Growth, and Marpipe launched what the partners believe to be the first enhanced image ads on Google Shopping in August 2026, according to TMCnet. The format allowed richer visual presentation inside the standard Shopping carousel—larger product images, multiple angles, and overlay text—without requiring a user to click through to a product page.

The three companies coordinated to test the placement as soon as Google made the format available, ahead of any formal announcement or widespread rollout. Enhanced image ads occupy the same real estate as standard Shopping listings but render with more pixel density and interactive elements, giving the advertiser more visual control before the click. MagBak, a maker of magnetic phone accessories, used the format to display mounting scenarios. Neon Growth and Marpipe, both marketing-technology providers, tested creative variations and bid strategies in parallel.

The mechanism works because Google Shopping remains an auction where creative format is a bid modifier. When a new ad unit launches, adoption lags: most brands do not update their feed specifications or creative templates for weeks or months. The advertiser who moves first captures higher click-through rates at the same cost-per-click, because the format novelty lifts engagement while competitive pressure remains low. Enhanced images also reduce the need for a secondary landing page to communicate product details, shortening the funnel and lifting conversion rate on mobile, where carousel browsing dominates.

The play for a smaller physical-product brand is to monitor Google Merchant Center release notes and beta invitations, then build the new creative spec within forty-eight hours. Most one-person brands ignore format updates because they assume enterprise budgets are required. In fact, enhanced image ads use the same feed structure as standard Shopping listings; the only addition is a supplemental image file with overlay text and a higher resolution. A founder can produce this in Canva in twenty minutes: export the hero product shot at 1200 x 1200 pixels, overlay the key benefit in 28-point sans-serif, and upload via the Merchant Center supplemental feed. Bid the same daily budget—twenty to fifty dollars—and measure click-through rate in the first seventy-two hours. If CTR lifts 15 percent or more, scale the spend before competitors adopt the format.

The cost to enter is near zero if the founder already runs Shopping ads. The time cost is one afternoon: reading the format spec, exporting compliant images, uploading the feed. The risk is also near zero because the old creative remains live as a fallback. The edge comes from moving while the auction is still underpriced. Most brands wait for a case study or an agency recommendation; by then, the arbitrage has closed.

The broader pattern is that Google and Meta both release new ad formats to drive revenue growth, and the first advertisers to adopt those formats capture surplus before equilibrium returns. Enhanced images, Collection ads, Advantage Plus Shopping—all followed the same curve. The next move is to set a calendar reminder for Merchant Center updates and treat format adoption as a standing sprint, not a one-time project.

The takeaway
Move on new Shopping ad formats within forty-eight hours; the arbitrage window closes when adoption rises.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
