Michaels tests 3 store formats with knit, sew, party zones — 3 locations, 3 distinct service plays

The craft retailer splits its footprint into category-driven experiences, betting that dedicated activity zones drive higher basket and visit frequency.

Michaels opened three new store formats in early 2025, each organized around a single craft vertical: one built for knitters, one for sewers, one for party planners, according to Retail Dive. The retailer previously operated a uniform big-box layout. The new stores dedicate floor space and staffing to deep category expertise, stocking specialized tools and offering project guidance tied to a single activity.

The move follows a pattern emerging across retail: narrowing the store to serve one customer job intensely instead of offering everything to everyone. Michaels already carries yarn, fabric, and party supplies in standard stores. The new formats remove adjacencies and rebuild the environment around a single use case. A knitting-focused store might stock 15 weight categories of yarn, run in-store stitch clinics, and employ staff who can diagnose tension problems. A party store might offer same-day balloon inflation, custom signage printing, and a dedicated checkout for time-pressed event buyers.

The mechanism is category authority. A shopper visits a general craft store when convenience matters. She visits a specialist store when the project matters — a sweater that must fit, a birthday that cannot fail. The format signals capability before the customer asks a question. Merchandising depth replaces breadth, and the store becomes a credible substitute for a local yarn shop or party supplier that may no longer exist in her area. Michaels can test whether frequency and basket size rise when the store is not competing with itself across twelve aisles.

Smaller physical-product brands can borrow the segmentation without opening new real estate. A Shopify store selling embroidery supplies might split its homepage into three parallel experiences: one landing page for cross-stitch beginners, one for advanced embroiderers, one for quilters adding embroidered blocks. Each page shows only the 8-12 SKUs that customer segment buys, written in the terms that community uses, with project inspiration that matches skill level. The customer self-selects into a narrow aisle and never sees the confusion of a general catalog. Backend inventory remains unified; the customer experience fractures.

A brand running this play starts with email segmentation or a quiz that routes inbound traffic. If the product serves multiple jobs — a cutting mat used by sewers, quilters, and scrapbookers — create three product pages with identical specs but different imagery and copy. The sewing page shows the mat under fabric with a rotary cutter. The quilting page shows it under a pieced block. The scrapbooking page shows it under cardstock. Tag customers by entry page and send tailored campaigns. The cost is three Canva templates and fifteen minutes of duplicate-page setup. The return is a customer who feels seen and does not bounce hunting for her use case in a generalist pile.

The broader retail pattern is format as filter. Stores and sites that try to serve all comers often serve none well, because the cognitive load of choice architecture exceeds the customer's patience. Michaels is testing whether a customer willing to drive to a knitting store converts and returns more reliably than one who visits a general craft store and walks the yarn aisle as one of twelve stops. For a direct brand, the same test runs in navigation depth and landing-page focus.

The takeaway
Segment your catalog into dedicated experience paths by customer job; let them self-select into a narrow, expert aisle instead of wandering a general store.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
