Only 14% of Food & Beverage Brands Gained Purchase Intent in 2024 — Why Package Clarity Won

Morning Consult data shows legacy players captured the slim growth window, leaving 86% flat or declining.

Morning Consult tracking data, reported by Yahoo Finance, shows that just 14% of food and beverage brands saw growth in consumer purchase intent in 2024. The bulk of that narrow growth channel went to legacy players, leaving the remaining 86% of brands flat or losing ground in a category that historically adds dozens of new SKUs every quarter.

The mechanism is clarifying. When nine out of ten brands cannot grow purchase intent, the bottleneck is not price, distribution, or media weight. It is clarity at the point of decision. Legacy players won because their packaging already occupies the mental real estate — consumers know what they are getting before they read a word. A new or reformulated brand without that equity must earn clarity on the package face in under two seconds, or the shopper defaults to the known option.

The legacy advantage compounds in tight markets. An established brand can shift packaging to highlight a single benefit — organic, high-protein, low-sugar — and ride existing recognition. A challenger brand arriving with the same benefit must simultaneously establish category, communicate the benefit, and close the trust gap, all on a 3×5-inch front panel. The data suggests most are failing that test. The result is shelf presence without purchase intent, a costly place to stall.

The steal for a small physical-product brand is ruthless simplification on the primary display panel. Strip the package to three elements: category anchor, single benefit, and proof. Category anchor means the shopper knows what this is in one glance — "Greek Yogurt," "Cold Brew Coffee," "Protein Bar." Single benefit is the one reason to switch, set in the largest type after the brand name. Proof is a third-party certification mark, an ingredient callout, or a gram count that closes the claim. Everything else — the origin story, the founder photo, the sustainability paragraph — moves to the back panel or disappears.

Run this as a packaging audit before the next print run. Photograph the current package. Show it to ten people outside the company for two seconds each. Ask them to write down the category and the benefit. If fewer than eight can do both, the package is not working in a 14% growth environment. Redesign costs $1,200–$3,500 for a competent freelance package designer with food and beverage experience. The new file goes to the same printer. The only variable cost is the plate change, typically $300–$800 depending on print method. For a small brand running 5,000-unit minimums, that is $0.30–$0.50 per unit to fix the primary barrier to purchase intent.

The broader pattern is that category headwinds do not hit all players equally. They hit the unclear first. In a contracting attention economy, the brand that requires the least cognitive load to evaluate wins the marginal shopper. Legacy players have that load advantage built in. A challenger brand without it is fighting for scraps in the 14% window, and the data says most are losing.

The takeaway
In a market where 86% of brands lost purchase intent, packaging clarity became the filter — three elements, two seconds, zero ambiguity.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
