Macy's revives Santaland, Bath & Body Works tests feel-good stores, Etsy bans AI—three paths to defend shelf space

Three retailers redesign customer touchpoints to sharpen what e-commerce cannot replicate: tradition, sensory merchandising, and human craft.

In plain words

Experience design beats price competition when the product is not rare but the visit is.

125-year-old
tradition that draws families for the photo with Santa…
15-minute scent-blending demo
every Saturday and let customers pour a small tester…

Macy's brought back its full Santaland installation and relaunched Holiday Square inside its Herald Square flagship this season, according to Retail Dive. Bath & Body Works opened a new store concept called the 'feel-good place,' reworking layout and sensory cues. Etsy tightened platform rules to prohibit AI-generated listings that dilute handmade credibility. Three retailers, three levers—all targeting the same problem: how to justify physical retail or curated digital shelf when Amazon and Temu compete on speed and cost.

Macy's Santaland is a 125-year-old tradition that draws families for the photo with Santa and the walk through themed rooms. The company had scaled it back during the pandemic. This year it restored the full experience and added Holiday Square, a street-level activation with gifting stations and live holiday music, per Retail Dive. The investment is not in product—it is in the reason to visit the store at all. Bath & Body Works' new format reorganizes fixtures and lighting to slow browsing and increase dwell time, leaning into scent as the navigation layer instead of price or promotion. Etsy's AI prohibition, rolled out in updated seller policies, blocks computer-generated art and text from listings unless the seller discloses and the item still meets handmade or vintage criteria, according to the platform's policy page. The message: if you are here, you are buying the human.

The common mechanism is destination design—the deliberate construction of a customer journey that cannot be compressed into a click. Santaland works because it turns shopping into a ritual. Parents return because their own parents brought them. The photo with Santa is content, memory, and social proof in one visit. That stickiness lets Macy's compete on frequency and basket, not unit price. Bath & Body Works' sensory store concept works because fragrance is one of the few categories where digital sampling fails. Customers want to smell before they buy, and a well-designed store lets the product do the selling without a single endcap price card. Etsy's AI ban works because the platform's value is curation—the algorithm is supposed to surface the maker, not the prompter. Allowing AI listings erodes the brand's pricing power and the seller's differentiation. Each retailer is protecting a moat that e-commerce either cannot cross or cannot afford to.

The steal for a small physical-product brand: build the visit, not the transaction. If you sell on your own site or at markets, create a reason to come that is not the product. A candle brand might host a 15-minute scent-blending demo every Saturday and let customers pour a small tester for free—content, experience, and samples in one activation. A jewelry brand could run monthly live engraving sessions where customers bring an old piece and add a line of text for the cost of materials. A home goods brand could rotate a monthly curated table styled by a local designer and let shoppers buy the setup as a bundle. The cost is time, not media. The return is repeat visits and word-of-mouth that do not decay. If you sell on a platform, the play is policy-compliant differentiation: write listings that emphasize process photos, maker bio, and material sourcing. Etsy's AI crackdown rewards sellers who already document their work. Lean into that. Post progress shots. Name your suppliers. Show the jig, the mistake, the hand finish. The same approach works on Amazon Handmade and standalone Shopify stores where story is the only lever you control without spending on ads.

Retailers with legacy advantages are sharpening them. Retailers without those advantages are building new ones before the commodity vortex swallows margin. The brands that survive the next three years will be the ones that give customers a reason to choose the harder path.

For the principal

Host one repeating in-person activation per month that costs time, not budget, and turns visitors into content creators.

For the operator

Audit every customer touchpoint for replicability—if Amazon or Temu can copy it in six weeks, it is not your moat.

For the house

Prioritize suppliers with documented process and branded rituals—procurement storytelling will differentiate your event or gift program when pricing converges.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
