MagBak, Neon Growth, and Marpipe launch first enhanced image ads on Google Shopping

Three brands expanded visual real estate on product listings, claiming a first-mover position on the platform.

MagBak, Neon Growth, and Marpipe launched what the partners believe to be the first enhanced image ads on Google Shopping in August 2026, according to TMCnet. The move expands the visual selling capability on product listings, adding more image slots to standard Shopping placements. The partners claimed no prior brand had shipped the format on the platform.

The enhanced image ads allow brands to display multiple product images directly within Google Shopping results, beyond the single default thumbnail. The feature increases visual real estate in the search results page, giving shoppers more context before clicking through to a product page. MagBak, a phone case and mount manufacturer, used the format to show installation angles and use-case scenarios in a single listing. Neon Growth, a performance marketing agency, brokered the implementation, and Marpipe, a creative testing platform, handled the ad creative variants.

The play works because it compresses the customer's consideration phase. Shoppers evaluating physical products scan for visual proof — fit, finish, context, scale — before committing to a click. A single thumbnail forces that evaluation to happen after the click, on the product page, where bounce rates are higher. Multiple images in the search result itself answer questions earlier, filtering low-intent traffic and raising the quality of inbound clicks. The brand pays only for clicks that already cleared a higher visual bar. Conversion rates improve because fewer shoppers arrive confused or mismatched.

The underlying mechanism is pre-qualification through expanded visual disclosure. Every additional image in the ad unit acts as a filter. A shopper who sees three angles of a product and still clicks is signaling stronger intent than one who clicks a lone thumbnail. The cost per click may rise slightly as competition for the format increases, but cost per acquisition typically drops because the funnel tightens. The brand effectively moves part of the product page gallery upstream into the search result, letting the platform's existing traffic do more of the qualification work.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play without a creative agency. Start by auditing the top 5 products by Google Shopping spend over the past 30 days. For each, identify the three images that answer the most common pre-purchase questions — typically a front view, a context shot showing scale or use, and a detail shot of the key feature. Export those images at Google's recommended 1200x1200 pixel format. In Google Merchant Center, navigate to the product feed and add supplemental image links using the additional_image_link attribute. Most platforms, including Shopify and WooCommerce, support this field natively. Upload the feed, wait 24 hours for Google's crawler to index the new images, then check the Shopping tab for the expanded ad unit. Total cost: the time to select and resize images, no media spend required beyond the existing Shopping budget.

Monitor click-through rate and conversion rate for products with enhanced images versus single-image controls over a 14-day window. If CTR rises but conversion rate holds or improves, the play is working — the extra images are attracting better-qualified traffic. If CTR rises but conversion rate drops, the additional images are attracting curiosity clicks from low-intent browsers, and the image selection needs refinement. Swap out the lowest-performing image angle and re-test. The format rewards specificity: close-ups of materials, dimension comparisons, and installation steps outperform generic lifestyle shots.

The broader pattern is platform-feature arbitrage. When a new ad format launches, early adopters capture attention and CTR at a lower effective cost because fewer competitors are using it. The window is narrow — typically 90 to 180 days before the format becomes table stakes. Brands that ship first extract the benefit before the rest of the category catches up and bid prices normalize.

The takeaway
Enhanced image ads on Google Shopping let brands show multiple product angles in search results, pre-qualifying clicks and tightening the funnel before shoppers land on the product page.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
