QRCodeChimp launches GS1 Digital Link generator as CPG brands face 2027 barcode deadline

New tool lets brands create compliant QR codes for Sunrise 2027 while adding consumer engagement layer to existing packaging.

QRCodeChimp released a GS1 Digital Link QR code generator designed to help retail brands and CPG companies prepare for the 2027 Sunrise requirement, according to USA Today. The deadline mandates that point-of-sale systems accept two-dimensional barcodes in addition to legacy linear barcodes, a shift that affects every packaged product moving through major retail channels.

The generator creates GS1 Digital Link codes that encode product identification data compliant with the global standard while embedding URLs that direct consumers to web content. Brands can encode GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), batch/lot numbers, expiration dates, and serial numbers in the same scannable code that also serves as a mobile engagement tool. The dual function collapses what previously required separate infrastructure: one code for checkout, another for consumer interaction.

The mechanism works because GS1 Digital Link embeds structured product data in a web URL format. A retailer's scanner reads the GTIN and related supply chain attributes directly from the QR code at checkout. A consumer scanning the same code with a smartphone follows the URL to product information, authenticity verification, or registration pages. No separate mobile app required. The brand controls the destination and can update linked content without changing the physical package.

For a physical product brand, this collapses two cost centers into one print run. Instead of printing a linear barcode for retail compliance and adding a separate QR code for consumer engagement, the brand prints one GS1 Digital Link code. The cost line stays the same or drops slightly due to reduced ink coverage. The brand gains trackable consumer scan data and a direct channel for recalls, cross-sell offers, or loyalty enrollment without additional package real estate.

The steal for a small brand starts with obtaining a GS1 Company Prefix from gs1us.org, which costs $250 annually for brands with ten or fewer products. Use QRCodeChimp or another compliant generator to create a GS1 Digital Link QR code encoding your GTIN and pointing to a simple landing page. Host the page on Carrd or a Shopify product page to keep infrastructure under $20 per month. Print the code on your next label run in the same position as your current linear barcode, sized at least 0.5 inches square for reliable scanning. Test the code at a local retailer with a checkout scanner before committing to full production. Update the linked landing page seasonally to drive repeat purchases or collect customer feedback without reprinting packaging.

The 2027 deadline is not optional for brands selling through grocery, mass merchandise, or pharmacy chains. Retailers must upgrade scanners to accept 2D codes by that date, and brands must provide them. Early movers gain three years to test consumer response, refine landing pages, and build a scan dataset before competitors flood the same channel. The brand that treats this compliance requirement as a consumer acquisition tool compounds the advantage.

The takeaway
GS1 Digital Link QR codes satisfy 2027 retail compliance and consumer engagement with one scannable code, collapsing two packaging costs into one.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
