QRCodeChimp launches GS1 Digital Link generator as CPG brands race to meet 2027 barcode mandate

The tool turns compliance infrastructure into updatable customer touchpoints without reprinting packaging.

Source USA Today ↗

QRCodeChimp released a GS1 QR Code Generator to help consumer packaged goods brands and retailers prepare for Sunrise 2027, the global point-of-sale transition that requires 2D barcodes on all retail packaging by 2027, according to USA Today. The tool generates GS1 Digital Link QR codes that satisfy both retail scanning requirements and direct-to-consumer engagement in a single package element.

The generator creates codes that encode product identifiers—GTIN, batch, expiration—in a format readable by existing point-of-sale systems while also linking to web content when scanned by a phone. Brands input product data through QRCodeChimp's interface, the system structures it to GS1 Digital Link standards, and outputs a printable code that serves dual roles: checkout identifier and consumer portal. The same code that rings up at Target can resolve to recipes, warranty registration, or loyalty enrollment when a buyer scans it at home.

This works because GS1 Digital Link embeds structured product data in a URL. A retailer's scanner reads the encoded GTIN and ignores the web address. A consumer's phone follows the link. The brand controls the destination URL without changing the printed code, so a QR on a shampoo bottle can point to ingredient lists in January and a refill program in March. The package stays compliant and the message updates remotely.

The mechanism solves two mandates at once. Sunrise 2027 eliminates legacy 1D barcodes, forcing every CPG brand to adopt 2D codes for point-of-sale. Separately, buyers now expect on-pack engagement—instructions, authenticity proof, subscription offers. Printing both a compliance barcode and a marketing QR wastes space and confuses the customer about which to scan. GS1 Digital Link collapses both into one mark, and the brand changes the post-scan experience server-side without reprinting cartons.

A small brand running its first retail placement can copy this before the first pallet ships. Use QRCodeChimp or a comparable GS1-certified generator to create a Digital Link code from your assigned GTIN. Verify the output scans correctly in the GS1 Digital Link Validator, then test it at a retail scanner if you have access to one. Set the redirect URL to a lightweight landing page—Carrd, Shopify page, or a Google Site—that loads fast on phone and delivers one clear next action: register the product, subscribe, or download the manual. Print the code at 300 DPI minimum, ideally in a corner or back panel with 10mm quiet zone. Budget $0 for the generator if using the free tier, or $15-30/month for volume and analytics. Update the destination URL seasonally without touching the package file.

The broader pattern here is compliance infrastructure that doubles as owned media. A required element—barcode, nutrition panel, safety label—becomes a persistent customer channel once the product leaves your sight. The QR doesn't add cost to the package; it replaces a mark you were printing anyway. The brand that treats mandated 2D codes as just another regulatory checkbox misses the chance to turn every SKU into an updatable endpoint.

The takeaway
GS1 Digital Link QR codes meet the 2027 retail mandate while giving brands a server-side updatable customer touchpoint on every package.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
