QRCodeStack adds GS1 Digital Link as retail requires 2D barcodes by 2027

One compliant QR code replaces old UPC barcodes and routes shoppers to product pages, ingredient lists, or recalls.

QRCodeStack now generates GS1 Digital Link QR codes built to URI Syntax 1.7.0, according to USA Today. The feature arrives as U.S. retailers prepare for Sunrise 2027, the industry deadline requiring scannable 2D barcodes on all packaged goods at point of sale. A brand can place one GS1-compliant code on a product and have it scan at checkout, link to a product page when a consumer taps it, and route to allergen data or recall notices depending on who scans and when.

The old UPC barcode carries only a product identifier. A GS1 Digital Link QR code embeds the same Global Trade Item Number but adds a resolvable web address and the ability to append serial numbers, lot codes, and expiration dates. Retailers need the extra data for traceability. Consumers want the product story. One code satisfies both, eliminating the need for separate QR codes for marketing and compliance.

The mechanism works because GS1 Digital Link is a standard URI format. When scanned at a point-of-sale terminal, the system reads the embedded GTIN and processes the transaction. When scanned by a smartphone, the same code resolves to a brand-controlled URL that can route based on geography, language, or device type. A breakfast cereal brand can send a U.S. shopper to a recipe page and a European shopper to a page listing allergens in the local language, all from the same physical code printed on the box.

A small brand running this play starts by obtaining a GS1 Company Prefix from GS1 US, which costs $250 annually for a business under $1 million in revenue and allows 100 unique product codes. The brand then uses QRCodeStack or a comparable generator to create a Digital Link QR code that embeds the GTIN and points to a landing page on the brand's own domain. The landing page uses a lightweight script to detect the scanner—point-of-sale systems identify themselves in the HTTP headers—and serves checkout data to retailers, product information to consumers. The brand prints the code on packaging at no incremental cost if already running a print run. No separate marketing QR code. No sticker over the UPC.

The next move is to log every scan. GS1 Digital Link URLs pass through the brand's server before redirecting, so the brand captures timestamp, location, and device type for each interaction. A canned-soup brand sees which retail chains scan most often, which ZIP codes generate the most consumer taps, and which products trigger the most ingredient lookups. That data informs the next packaging refresh and the retail pitch. The compliance requirement becomes the owned data channel.

The takeaway
One GS1 Digital Link QR code on your package scans at checkout and routes consumers to your content with no extra print cost.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
