TikTok Shop is projected to overtake the US ecommerce operations of both Target and Costco by 2026, according to MSN Money, as the social commerce market reaches $23 billion in the United States. The growth represents a structural shift in how physical products reach buyers: transaction happens inside the feed, not on a separate retail site.

The mechanism is friction removal. Traditional ecommerce requires a user to see a product, leave the platform, navigate a retailer's app or site, add to cart, and check out. TikTok Shop collapses that sequence. A creator posts a product link, the viewer taps, buys within the app, and scrolls on. No context switch. No new login. The purchase happens in the same session as discovery, and the platform keeps the user inside its own transaction loop.

This works because the feed is already the point of intent. A beauty tutorial that demonstrates a serum does not send the viewer to Sephora's site to hunt for the product. The serum is linked in the video. One tap, bought. The creator earns a commission, the platform takes a cut, and the brand moves inventory without paying for a standalone acquisition funnel. The entire purchase path fits inside 30 seconds of watch time.

For a small physical-product brand, the play is accessible. You do not need a seven-figure ad budget or a warehouse. You need product that performs on camera and a creator who will post it. Start with TikTok Shop's seller onboarding, which is free and takes less than a week to approve. Upload your SKU, set a commission rate for creators—typically 10 to 20 percent—and use TikTok's Creator Marketplace to identify accounts in your niche with 5,000 to 50,000 followers. These micro-creators charge little or nothing upfront if the commission is competitive.

Send product to three creators. Ask for one video each, with your product linked in TikTok Shop. Track which video drives sales in your Seller Center dashboard. Double down on that creator: send more product, negotiate a monthly retainer if the return justifies it, and test a second product. The entire test costs the product samples, shipping, and the commission on what sells. No media buy required.

The broader pattern is platform commerce replacing destination commerce. Buyers increasingly purchase where they already spend time, not where they intend to shop. A brand that waits for traffic to arrive at its own site is competing with every other tab, app, and distraction. A brand that places product inside the scroll competes only with the next video. TikTok Shop is the leading edge, but Instagram Shopping, YouTube Shopping, and Pinterest's buyable pins follow the same logic. The transaction layer is migrating into the feed, and the brands that ship there first take the margin before the platform raises the toll.

The takeaway
Sell where the scroll is: link product inside creator videos on TikTok Shop, pay only commission on sales, skip the acquisition funnel.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
