Target embeds AI shopping assistant into owned channels, bypasses search ads entirely

The retailer's Ask Target tool replaces third-party discovery spend with a first-party conversion layer.

In plain words

Target's AI assistant captures product questions inside owned channels, bypassing search ads—a play any brand can run with FAQ pages, chatbots, or a simple gift finder.

Target launched Ask Target, an AI-powered shopping assistant embedded directly into Target.com and the Target app, ahead of the 2024 holiday season, according to Digiday. The tool answers product questions, suggests items, and guides purchase decisions inside the retailer's owned digital properties. Target did not disclose adoption rates or conversion lift, but the strategic bet is clear: own the last mile of product discovery, rather than rent it from Google or Meta.

The assistant lives natively in the Target app and on the site. A shopper types a question—gift ideas for a teacher, space heaters under seventy dollars, stocking stuffers for teens—and the AI returns product recommendations from Target's catalog, filtering by price, category, and availability. The interface resembles a chat window. The backend pulls from Target's inventory system in real time, so recommendations reflect what the retailer can actually ship. No affiliate links. No third-party redirects. The entire journey stays inside Target's ecosystem.

The mechanism is channel capture. Most retailers lose shoppers at the discovery phase: a consumer searches on Google, clicks a product listing ad, lands on a site, then bounces to compare prices elsewhere. Target is collapsing that loop. By embedding AI assistance at the entry point—inside the app or site where a shopper is already browsing—the retailer intercepts the question before it reaches a search engine. The AI becomes the discovery layer. Target controls the answer set, the product selection, and the purchase path. For a retailer with two thousand owned SKUs and a loyalty program covering tens of millions of members, first-party discovery at scale cuts dependency on paid search and social. The assistant also functions as a merchandising lever: Target can weight recommendations toward higher-margin items, exclusives, or overstock without disclosing the bias to the shopper.

A small physical-product brand cannot build a conversational AI from scratch, but the underlying play—owning the question-and-answer layer before a customer searches elsewhere—is portable. Start with email. When a subscriber replies to a campaign or sends a question, respond with a short, plain-text answer that includes two or three product links, each with a one-line reason to buy. Use a shared inbox or a simple CRM to track repeat questions. If the same question appears five times in a month, write a short FAQ page and link to it in every email footer. Cost: zero dollars. Next, add a chatbot to the site. Tools like Tidio or Gorgias start at twenty dollars a month. Build a decision tree: the bot asks the shopper's use case, budget, or recipient type, then routes to a curated product set. No machine learning required. The goal is the same as Target's: catch the question inside your owned channel, answer it with your product, and close the loop before the shopper opens a new tab.

For a brand with a catalog of ten to fifty SKUs, the play scales down further. Create a single-page gift finder: a six-question form that outputs a recommendation based on answers. Host it on your domain. Drive traffic to it from Instagram Stories, email, and SMS. Each question narrows the funnel—occasion, budget, recipient—and the output is a product page link with a discount code. The form itself becomes the discovery tool. No AI. No app. Just a structured path from question to cart. If a brand captures thirty percent of inbound product questions inside owned channels instead of losing them to Google, the math compounds: lower acquisition cost, higher average order value, and repeat buyers who return to the brand's site instead of starting over in search.

The broader pattern is substitution: replace rented attention with owned infrastructure. Target is betting that a shopper who asks the AI for gift ideas will convert at a higher rate than one who clicks a paid ad, because the AI delivers an answer tailored to Target's inventory and the shopper never leaves the property. A small brand can run the same trade: spend less on search ads, invest more in owned-channel tools that answer questions and route to product. The next move is measurement. Track how many inbound questions you field each month, where they come from, and which ones convert. Then build the shortest possible path from question to answer to purchase, all inside your own fence.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap.
