Target embeds AI assistant to guide holiday shoppers through 1,000+ exclusive items

The retailer pairs conversational search with scarcity messaging to drive conversion at the product-discovery layer.

In plain words

Use a simple quiz to route shoppers to exclusive or low-stock items at discovery, collapsing choice and adding urgency before cart.

Target launched Ask Target, an AI-powered shopping assistant, on its website and mobile app ahead of the 2024 holiday season, according to Digiday. The tool functions as conversational search: shoppers type questions and the assistant surfaces relevant products from Target's inventory, with particular emphasis on affordability filters and the retailer's exclusive lines.

The mechanics are straightforward. A user opens the app or site, accesses the assistant, and asks a plain-language question—"What can I get for under $25 for a teenage nephew?" The AI returns curated product lists, pulling from Target's owned brands and holiday exclusives. Target is also layering in scarcity cues: the assistant flags items available only at Target and highlights time-limited availability, Digiday reports. The combination of convenience and exclusivity signals is deliberate.

This works because it collapses the discovery-to-decision loop. Traditional e-commerce search requires the shopper to know what they want and how to describe it. Conversational AI lets them start vague and arrive at a specific SKU in fewer steps. For physical products, that speed matters: the shopper who bounces after three failed keyword searches never reaches checkout. By framing results around budget and exclusivity, Target also pre-loads two purchase justifications—affordability and unavailability elsewhere—directly into the discovery layer. The assistant doesn't just find the product; it starts building the case for buying it.

The scarcity layer is the second mechanism. When the assistant surfaces an exclusive item and notes it's only at Target, the shopper immediately understands they cannot comparison-shop it away. That eliminates a friction point that kills conversion for commodity goods. The retailer is betting that guiding the shopper to exclusive inventory at the moment of discovery will drive higher add-to-cart rates than surfacing the same exclusives through manual browse.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play without building an AI assistant. Start with a landing page or a quiz-style product finder on your site. Use a tool like Typeform or a Shopify quiz app to ask three questions: budget, recipient type, and occasion. Map answers to specific SKUs in your catalog. For example: "Under $30, for a coworker, holiday gift" routes to a curated set of three products. On the results page, label one item as "limited batch" or "exclusive to our site" and show current stock count if it's below 50 units. The labeling does the work the AI does at scale—it narrows choice and adds urgency at the decision point.

Next, integrate that finder into your email flows and paid social. Run a Facebook ad with the hook "Not sure what to get? Answer 3 questions" and link directly to the quiz. In your abandoned-cart email, include a line: "Still deciding? Try our gift finder"—and link back. The quiz becomes a conversion tool and a list-building mechanism. Collect the email before showing results, so even a non-purchaser enters your nurture sequence. If you're selling on a marketplace without a custom site, replicate this in your product descriptions: create a "gift guide" section in your storefront that groups items by budget and recipient, and label exclusive or low-stock items clearly in the title and image.

The broader pattern here is embedding decision support at the top of the funnel, not the bottom. Most brands wait until checkout to add urgency or clarity. Target is doing it at search. You can do it at discovery by making your catalog navigable through buyer intent—budget, use case, exclusivity—rather than product attributes alone. The mechanism scales down: fewer SKUs mean tighter curation, and manual mapping replaces machine learning without losing the effect.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
