TikTok Shop is on track to surpass the US e-commerce operations of both Target and Costco in 2026, according to reporting on social commerce growth. Social commerce overall reached $23 billion in the United States, marking a structural shift in where physical products actually move.
The mechanism is distribution bypass. TikTok Shop converts attention into transaction inside the same session — no off-platform click, no tab switch, no cart abandonment from a second domain. The user watches a creator unbox a collagen powder or test a portable blender, taps the product tag, and completes checkout without leaving the feed. That session compression removes the friction that kills most product discovery. Target and Costco built e-commerce as extensions of brick-and-mortar; TikTok built it as the native outcome of the scroll.
This matters because shelf space is now algorithmic. A supplement brand or home-goods maker that relied on Target.com placement now competes against creator-endorsed alternatives that appear in-feed to the exact customer who just searched "best sleep magnesium" on Google three days ago. The algorithm surfaces products based on engagement velocity, not category buyer or planogram slot. Brands that control their own creator pipeline and can ship product for seeding within 48 hours win placement. Brands waiting for a retail buyer's quarterly review lose it.
The steal for a small physical-product brand: identify three to five creators in your category with 10,000 to 50,000 followers and authentic product use in their content history. Send a cold DM with a one-sentence product description, a single benefit proof point, and an offer to ship a sample with no posting obligation. When they post, immediately list your SKU on TikTok Shop with a creator commission between 10% and 20%. Tag the creator as an affiliate so their audience sees the product link live under their video. Ship orders same-day or next-day; TikTok's algorithm rewards fast fulfillment with higher placement. Budget $300 to $500 for sample product, $50 for the TikTok Shop seller setup, and margin for the commission. The creator does the discovery work; the platform does the conversion; you do fulfillment.
The broader pattern is that distribution is now rented by the post, not the quarter. A brand that can provision creator inventory, turn on affiliate splits, and ship within the platform's fulfillment window controls a channel that is growing faster than the e-commerce arms of the two largest physical retailers in the United States. The brands that wait for a buyer meeting will find the meeting canceled because the buyer is now chasing the same creators.
