Ulta Beauty Launched TikTok Shop With Ice Spice Fragrance, Earned 4.4 Million Views In 48 Hours

Ulta Beauty opened its TikTok Shop in May with a celebrity fragrance launch, banking on the creator's built-in audience to solve the retailer's distribution problem on unfamiliar ground. According to Glossy, the beauty chain debuted Ice Spice's first fragrance exclusively through TikTok Shop, generating 4.4 million views in the first 48 hours and selling out the initial inventory within days.

The move was methodical. Ulta announced its TikTok Shop intentions in March but waited until it had a product from a creator native to the platform. Ice Spice, a rapper with 13.2 million TikTok followers, launched "Y2K! Eau de Parfum" through Ulta's shop on May 14. The fragrance retailed at $49 for a 1.7-ounce bottle. Ulta ran no paid media at launch. The distribution came entirely from Ice Spice's organic posts, Ulta's TikTok account, and the platform's native shopping feed.

This worked because Ulta borrowed credibility instead of building it. TikTok Shop is a recommendation engine, not a search engine. Brands with no follower base or content history start at zero. By launching with a creator who already had 13.2 million followers actively watching her feed, Ulta entered the platform with an audience that trusted the source. The fragrance wasn't positioned as an Ulta product—it was Ice Spice's product, available at Ulta. That flipped the usual celebrity-endorsement math. The creator wasn't promoting the retailer; the retailer was distributing the creator's product.

The mechanism is transferable. Any physical-product brand entering a new platform can reverse the credibility problem by launching someone else's product first. Instead of building an audience from scratch, the brand serves as fulfillment and logistics for a creator who already has distribution. The creator posts. The brand ships. The platform's algorithm sees engagement from an established account and amplifies it. The brand gets tagged in every post, building its own profile in the slip stream.

A smaller brand copies this by finding a mid-tier creator—10,000 to 100,000 followers—who wants to launch a physical product but has no supply chain. Offer to co-create a limited SKU under their name, with your manufacturing and fulfillment. Set the deal as a revenue share, not an upfront fee: the creator keeps 40-50% of net sales, you keep the rest. Launch it exclusively on one platform where the creator already has traction. The creator posts the announcement and unboxing content. You handle inventory, shipping, and customer service. The creator's audience buys because they trust the creator. The platform sees engagement and pushes the content to more users. Your brand appears in every post as the maker, building platform credibility without paying for ads.

For Ulta, the play also solved the fragrance category's sampling problem on e-commerce. TikTok users can't smell a product through a screen, but they can watch someone they follow explain how it smells and why they made it. Ice Spice posted a 90-second video describing the scent notes and the Y2K inspiration. That creator testimony replaced the tester bottle. According to Glossy, Ulta plans to expand its TikTok Shop assortment with more exclusive launches, using the same model: products from creators with existing platform audiences, sold through Ulta's logistics.

The pattern extends beyond TikTok. Any platform where discovery is algorithmic and credibility is follower-based rewards brands that launch with borrowed audiences. The creator gets a product with no supply-chain risk. The brand gets distribution with no cold-start penalty. The platform gets content that drives commerce. The customer buys from someone they already trust. The brand that plays fulfillment partner first becomes the recognized supplier second.

The takeaway
Launch a creator's product on a new platform to borrow their audience, then build your brand profile in the engagement wake.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
