Walgreens bets 1,200 in-store digital screens will fix its retail media misfire

After scaling back digital ads, the chain is targeting high-traffic zones where shopper dwell time converts to impressions.

Walgreens is installing digital advertising screens in 1,200 stores, doubling down on in-store retail media after an earlier digital screen rollout underperformed, according to Modern Retail. The company is explicitly targeting what it calls "higher-performing" placements — positions in the store where foot traffic and dwell time create sustained ad exposure.

The move acknowledges a hard lesson: not all in-store ad inventory is equal. Walgreens previously deployed digital screens without disciplined placement strategy, and CPG brands saw low engagement relative to cost. This time, the chain is concentrating screens near pharmacy counters, checkout lanes, and beauty endcaps — zones where shoppers wait or browse slowly enough to absorb a message. The screens will carry both paid ads and educational content, blending brand messages with product information to justify the dwell.

The mechanism is dwell arbitrage. A shopper standing in a pharmacy queue for 90 seconds sees more impressions than one walking past an aisle endcap. Walgreens is effectively selling time, not traffic. For CPG brands, this matters because in-store digital has historically struggled with attribution — a brand pays for placement but can't confirm the shopper looked. High-dwell zones solve that by making the view unavoidable. A screen at the pharmacy pickup window gets seen; one midway down aisle seven does not.

This also signals Walgreens' play for a larger share of CPG trade spend. Retail media at grocery and drug chains now competes directly with distributors' slotting fees and promo budgets. If Walgreens can prove that a $5,000 monthly screen placement in 50 high-traffic stores drives measurable lift, it converts ad spend that would have gone to an FSI or a temporary price reduction. The company is building a margin business on top of its physical shelf.

For a small physical-product brand, the steal is not buying Walgreens' screen inventory — it's building your own high-dwell digital moment at far lower cost. Identify where your customer waits: the checkout counter at your retail partner, the service desk at a trade show booth, the lobby at a coworking space your product stocks in its pantry. Place a 10-inch tablet on a stand, loop a 15-second product video with a QR code to purchase, and leave it running. Cost: one used tablet ($80), a video you shoot on your phone and edit in CapCut (free), and a Gumroad or Shopify link. If you're in 12 retail doors, that's $960 in hardware and zero recurring cost.

The content doesn't need production value; it needs clarity and a single call to action. A 12-second loop showing your product in use, your brand name, and a QR code performs better than a static shelf talker because it moves. Motion draws the eye during dead time. If your product sits on a counter where customers wait — a bike shop, a boutique hotel front desk, a brewery tasting room — you now own that dwell time. The partner often welcomes it because it fills awkward silence.

This is the same play Walgreens is running, just at tabletop scale. You're not competing with their 1,200-store footprint; you're deploying the same dwell logic in the 6 or 12 doors where your product already lives. Test it in your highest-traffic account first. If the QR scans increase over a 30-day period, expand to the next three doors. If they don't, the screen moves to checkout or the product gets pulled. You're running a retail media network of one, and your only cost is the hardware you already own.

The takeaway
High-dwell zones turn waiting time into ad impressions — scale it down to a tablet and QR loop at your own retail counter.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
