Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Pet food brand invests $3.5M in brand marketing after zero spend for years

Per Modern Retail, Spot & Tango, a fresh pet food DTC brand, committed $3.5M to brand marketing campaigns after operating with no brand spend, signaling a shift from pure performance marketing to narrative-driven customer acquisition.

ReadingThe steal: brand spend becomes efficient at scale because your repeat rate no longer depends on discounts. Spot & Tango no longer needs to bribe the first buyer; it needs to tell the story to ten times as many first buyers at the same cost per head. Once you've built the machine (production, logistics, repeat rate above 40%), brand spend starts to work. Run the same test this quarter—what percentage of your CAC goes to brand narrative versus performance? If it's below 15%, you're likely still in the acquisition-only phase. At scale, flip it.
WatchWatch for Spot & Tango to report repeat rate and LTV changes in Q1 2026 after this spend cycle lands.

Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 bundle sold out in 4 hours

Per tech-insider.org, Nintendo's Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console sold out in 4 hours after launch, demonstrating the power of IP-tied limited hardware in physical product retail.

ReadingThe steal: you don't need a new product category to create urgency—you need a new story attached to an existing one. Zelda didn't invent the Switch; it gave it a reason to be bought today instead of next month. If you make a physical product, test a limited IP co-brand or anniversary edition with your supplier this quarter. Pair the sku, set a drop date, tell the story publicly three weeks ahead, then cut supply 20% below pre-order demand. The gap creates the line.
WatchWatch for Nintendo to announce secondary market resale price data on this bundle in Q1 2026.

DoorDash hands brands live shelf data from consumer orders and audit signals

Per PYMNTS, DoorDash introduced a platform that provides brands with purchase-based signals from consumer orders and audit-based signals from retail shelves, enabling brands to measure real-time shelf performance and buyer behavior in local markets.

ReadingThe steal: most brands flying DTC don't know what happens to their product once it hits a retailer's shelf. Shelf visibility, stock-outs, and placement rot in silence. This platform gives a brand real-time shelf truth without hiring a field team. If you've placed product in 50+ retail doors, sign up for this now and run a weekly audit on one zip code. Find the shelf that underperforms versus the order velocity in that area, then fix placement or restock frequency. The brands winning wholesale in 2026 will be the ones using audit data weekly, not monthly.
WatchWatch for DoorDash to announce CPG partnerships using this audit data for co-op marketing in Q2 2026.

On Holding boosts 2026 guidance with new premium brand playbook

Per SGB Media, On Holding presented a new brand premium playbook and raised 2026 guidance, indicating a successful shift toward high-margin, narrative-driven positioning within the athletic footwear category.

ReadingThe steal: when a footwear or apparel brand raises guidance, it usually means ASP went up without volume falling proportionally. That happens when you stop selling the shoe and start selling the story. Run this test on your lowest-selling SKU this month: bundle it with a founder story, a local-made callout, or a supply-chain transparency note. Relaunch it at 20% higher price with the narrative. Measure volume and margin. Most brands find the sweet spot sits 10-15% above where they started, not the full 20%.
WatchWatch for On Holding to report Q1 2026 premium-tier sell-through rates and ASP movement by channel.

Partnership connects retail media planning, activation, and measurement in one platform

Per TMCnet, Horizon Commerce and Pacvue expanded their partnership to connect retail media planning, activation, and measurement, allowing brands to move faster from strategy to shelf impact with integrated tools.

ReadingThe steal: most brands running Amazon or Walmart retail media still piece together the workflow—they plan in a spreadsheet, brief the platform team, then wait weeks for performance reports. This integration lets a mid-size brand operator (one person, modest budget) run a 10-SKU test campaign from planning to measurement in days instead of weeks. If you're running retail media, sign up for the free tier of an integrated platform this month and run one test campaign. Measure the time delta between manual workflow and integrated workflow. You'll likely find 60-70% faster activation.
WatchWatch for Horizon Commerce to announce CPG client case studies showing media-to-sales attribution by Q2 2026.

Brands scaling retail media spending as live shelf data and attribution tools proliferate

Per ADWEEK and Kantar reporting, brands are increasing retail media budgets as platforms integrate measurement and shelf-audit data, making ROI tracking more transparent and reducing media waste in store environments.

ReadingThe steal: if you have product in 100+ retail doors, retail media is now your highest-ROAS lever. Most DTC brands still treat it as an afterthought. This quarter, allocate 20% of your media budget to retail media testing—start with a single banner placement on one retailer's homepage and one in-store digital ad. Measure shelf velocity (sell-through rate) versus baseline in that store. Expect 2-3x faster turn. Then scale spend, not reach; same geography, more placements.

Pop-up shop marketing shows explosive retail experience boom in 2026, per Amra & Elma

Per Amra & Elma's 2026 statistics, pop-up shop marketing and experiential retail experiences are seeing significant growth as brands test short-term, high-impact physical retail alternatives to permanent wholesale.

ReadingThe steal: instead of negotiating a 12-month lease and fighting for shelf space, run a 30-day pop-up in a high-foot-traffic zone (mall, downtown street, event venue) this quarter. Measure transactions, conversion rate, and gather 50+ customer interviews on product feedback and pricing. Use the data to refine your wholesale pitch or DTC offer. Most brands find pop-ups cost 40% less than traditional retail activation and generate 10x more customer insight per dollar.
WatchWatch for major brands to announce Q1-Q2 2026 pop-up schedules and footfall data.
