Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Whole Foods selected 10 emerging brands for flagship shelf placement via LEAP program

Whole Foods Market announced 10 brands selected for the Early Growth cohort of its Local & Emerging Brands Program (LEAP), granting direct access to store shelves across the chain.

ReadingThe steal: apply to a retailer's own incubator, not their buyer. Whole Foods runs LEAP because it reduces their discovery cost — they find brands before they're viral, before the margins compress. Submit to LEAP or its equivalent (Sprouts, Natural Grocers, Kroger Emerging Brand programs all exist) and you skip the wholesale broker tax. The mechanism is curation as positioning: you don't negotiate shelf space, you get invited.
MY STASH TAKEMost brands chase buyers. LEAP inverts that — the retailer comes to you if you're in the program. It's not glamorous, but it's how the math works for physical retail right now. A product that passes Whole Foods' vetting signals quality to every other chain watching. Apply to the retailer's own program, not to the buyer directly.
WatchWatch for LEAP alumni appearing in other high-curation chains within 18 months.

Brooklinen moved celebrity campaign in-house, cutting agency overhead and maintaining brand voice

Brooklinen executed its first celebrity-led campaign in-house rather than through a traditional agency, maintaining creative control and reducing production friction.

ReadingThe steal: hire the celebrity, not the agency. A production house or freelance creative director costs less than a full agency retainer and you keep the creative brief in-house. The celebrity or influencer becomes an extension of your team, not a third-party asset. This works because Brooklinen already has a documented voice — they're just amplifying it through a known face. If you don't have a house voice yet, this play doesn't work; if you do, in-house celebrity moves faster and cheaper.
MY STASH TAKEThe agency structure is built for brands that don't know what they're saying. Brooklinen knows. They brought it in-house so the celebrity becomes Brooklinen, not Brooklinen becomes the celebrity's backdrop. That's the real shift — ownership, not outsourcing.
WatchWatch for Brooklinen to announce the celebrity name and sales lift tied to the campaign.

Wayfair increased sports marketing spend for values-focused brand positioning

Wayfair upped its investment in sports properties as part of a broader values-focused brand platform strategy, tying the home brand to live sports audiences.

ReadingThe steal: sponsor a local sports team or tournament, not a national league. A regional minor-league team or college tournament gives you disproportionate audience density for lower spend. You get naming rights, booth presence at games, and audience affinity without the ESPN premium. For a home-goods brand, the local play outperforms national because your buyers live there. If you sell furniture, sponsor the community center tournament, not the NFL.
MY STASH TAKEWayfair didn't invent sports marketing. They're just doing the math: home brands sell better when people associate them with community gathering. A local sports investment costs less than regional digital and carries more credibility because it's there.
WatchWatch for Wayfair to announce exclusive home-goods bundles tied to sports team sponsorships.

Siren's Tale Vodka accepted into FMCG incubator program for scaling support

Fast Moving Consumer Goods welcomed Siren's Tale Vodka into its FMCG Incubator, providing scaling infrastructure for the spirit brand.

ReadingThe steal: apply to spirit and beverage incubators before you approach distributors. Incubators have relationships with wholesalers and states; going direct to a distributor without incubator backing puts you last in their queue. FMCG and similar programs (Craft & Co., Brand Foundry, others) exist to de-risk early brands. They take a piece of upside, but they fast-track you past the gating that kills most spirits businesses — regulatory approval, three-tier compliance, and distributor minimums.
MY STASH TAKESpirits are the hardest category to scale because of three-tier regulation and distributor gatekeeping. An incubator removes both. Siren's Tale didn't have to cold-call distributors in 50 states; they got matched to ones the incubator already partners with.
WatchWatch for Siren's Tale to expand distribution into new states or chains tied to FMCG relationships.

M&M's campaign taps film and TV genre tropes, boosting creative relevance across multiple formats

BBDO Chicago created 'Screentime,' a campaign featuring M&M's mascots reimagined across film and TV genres — crime thrillers, telenovelas, and reality formats — to increase cultural footprint.

ReadingThe steal: don't make ads about your product in popular genres; make your mascot part of the genre. A candy brand in a telenovela isn't selling candy — it's participating in telenovela storytelling. The mascot becomes a familiar character in an unfamiliar context. For a smaller brand, this means TikTok or YouTube short series where your mascot/character appears in trending formats (true crime recaps, dating shows, survival challenges). Budget goes into writing and casting, not media buys.
MY STASH TAKEM&M's already owns those mascots. They're not creating them; they're just moving them through the genres their audience actually watches. That's the insight: you probably have a brand character already. Put them in the entertainment your audience consumes, not the entertainment they interrupt.
WatchWatch for M&M's to announce branded short-form series or YouTube originals extending the Screentime concept.

Connected packaging (QR/NFC + AI) is scaling across brands, turning boxes into data gateways

Connected packaging — physical packs equipped with QR codes, NFC tags, and AI-driven data — is accelerating adoption as brands use packaging as a gateway to product information, traceability, and digital services.

ReadingThe steal: print a QR code on your existing packaging and wire it to a simple landing page with an email capture. No AI needed to start. The page asks one question ("Have you used this before?") and branches from there. Brands scaling this move to NFC (near-field communication) tags because they don't require the buyer to photograph the box — a phone tap is faster. For a one-person brand, start with QR and Linktree or a custom Zapier form. For $5-15 per thousand units, you add the infrastructure that turns a one-time buyer into a repeater because the box itself solicits feedback or flags a refill window.
MY STASH TAKEThis pattern is real because the cost is gone. A QR code on your existing packaging costs near-nothing. The play isn't the tech; it's the fact that most brands leave the box blank after the purchase. The box is sitting on a shelf in their house; make it useful and it becomes a retention lever.
WatchWatch for small brands announcing QR-to-refill or QR-to-loyalty integrations on packaging.

AI-powered product recommendations are reshaping retail shelf strategy and brand planning

Brands are adapting their retail strategies as AI product recommendation systems begin to reshape how shelves are curated and what shoppers see in-store, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: optimize your product listing (title, description, ratings, reviews) for retail AI systems the same way you optimize for Amazon search. Call your category correctly, include benefit keywords (not feature keywords), and solicit authentic reviews post-purchase. Retail chains are deploying recommendation engines; if your product can't be found algorithmically, it won't be found. For small brands on shelves, this means the physical placement matters less than the data your product carries. Two products side-by-side; the one with more reviews and higher ratings gets recommended more by the store's AI.
MY STASH TAKEShelf strategy is moving from negotiation to data. If that sounds abstract, here's the concrete version: clean up your product page on the retailer's system the same way you'd clean up your Amazon page. Get reviews, nail the title, be consistent on inventory. The AI will do the rest.
WatchWatch for major retailers (Kroger, Whole Foods, Target) announcing AI-driven planogram changes in Q1 2027.
