Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Digital sales hit $33 billion in 2026, up more than 20% year-over-year

Costco's digital revenue reached $33 billion in 2026, growing more than 20%, driven by partnerships with DoorDash and Uber Eats that extended the warehouse beyond physical walls, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: do not own the delivery. Integrate into the platforms where your buyer is already ordering. Costco did not hire drivers or build warehouses; it listed SKUs inside DoorDash and Uber Eats and let their algorithms show the product. The third-party platform bears the logistics cost and customer acquisition risk. You pay commission on what sells. This is the inverse of direct-to-consumer — it is direct-to-existing-traffic. For a physical-product brand not yet on a delivery platform, the play is: rank your top 500 SKUs by margin, then approach one logistics platform with a pilot (200 SKUs in one region, 60 days). Measure attach rate and repeat order. Ship only what sells.
WatchWatch for Costco to launch a private-label line exclusive to delivery platforms — the captive SKU that only moves through these partners.

Retail media now centers on CTV as brand pitch for electronics buyers

Best Buy repositioned its retail media network around connected TV (CTV) advertising, placing electronics at the heart of its seller pitch, per Modern Retail's Big-Box Briefing.

ReadingThe steal: retail media does not have to live on a shelf. Best Buy has moved its advertising business to the place where the buyer is most receptive — the screen in their home. For a brand selling to electronics buyers, the play is: approach Best Buy's media team with a pilot — $50K spend over 60 days, targeting households that have purchased a competitor product or browsed a related category. Measure site traffic, not in-store foot traffic. CTV attribution is cleaner than shelf lift. If cost per acquisition (CPA) is below your paid-social benchmark, scale to $200K in Q1.
WatchWatch for Best Buy to launch dynamic CTV creatives that change based on browsing behavior — ads that personalize by category or price point.

First in-house celebrity campaign breaks internal creative model

Brooklinen launched its first celebrity-led campaign built entirely in-house, shifting from agency-dependent work to owned creative execution, per Marketing Dive's Campaign Trail.

ReadingThe steal: the celebrity does not sell the product — the product team does, using the celebrity's audience and credibility to reach first. By moving production in-house, Brooklinen owns the approval cycle and the data flow from the campaign. No agency markup, no 6-week approval chain. The real win is speed: if week one of the campaign sees a spike in a specific product category, the team can shoot new content around that winner within 48 hours. For a DTC brand with existing video chops, the play is: identify one micro-celebrity (50K–500K followers) in your category, offer free product for one month, and ask them to document real usage. Post daily to your own channel and tag them. Measure site traffic and new customer acquisition cost (CAC) weekly. If CAC is below paid social, offer exclusivity and a small retainer ($5K–$15K) for monthly content drops.
WatchWatch for Brooklinen to test affiliate-style payouts where the celebrity earns a percentage of sales driven through a unique link.

Hamptons store drops signature red facade, blends into neighborhood

Target opened a new location in Bridgehampton, New York without its signature red exterior, adapting the facade to local aesthetic preferences, per Retail Dive.

ReadingThe steal: the store facade is not the brand — the inside is. Target proved that exterior design can flex by location without confusing the buyer. For a retail brand entering a new market (especially high-income or design-conscious neighborhoods), the play is: research the top 20 surrounding businesses and map their exterior design language (materials, color, fenestration). Do not copy them, but signal adjacency. Hire a local architect for a 2-week study. Produce two exterior mockups: one branded, one neighborhood-adaptive. Test both with 200 local respondents ($8K spend). If the adaptive version scores higher on purchase intent and perceived quality, it is worth the production cost. This is not about dishonesty; it is about reading the room.
WatchWatch for Target to test neighborhood-adaptive interiors next — customized endcaps or category emphasis based on local income and purchase patterns.

Genre-hopping campaign taps film and TV tropes for earned media

M&M's ran a campaign called "Screentime" that placed its mascots in genre-specific parodies (crime thriller, telenovela, survival reality), built by BBDO Chicago, per Marketing Dive.

ReadingThe steal: do not make one campaign. Make five versions, each keyed to a different audience or platform behavior. A telenovela parody will get shared in one community; the crime thriller version in another. The brand runs one media buy but earns five social threads. For a product brand, the play is: pick three audience psychographics (age/taste/platform). Commission a copywriter to write three versions of your core message — one as an action scene, one as a rom-com, one as a cooking show. Post all three to TikTok and Instagram as separate videos. Measure watch time and shares by version. Amplify the winner with paid spend. Cost to commission: $3K–$8K per version. The earned media from TikTok alone can be 3–5x paid spend.
WatchWatch for M&M's to release behind-the-scenes content showing how each genre was cast and shot — a second wave of engagement.

Sports investment becomes platform for values-focused brand messaging

Wayfair increased its investment in sports marketing as a vehicle for communicating brand values, per Marketing Dive.

ReadingThe steal: values are communicated through association, not claims. Wayfair's spend in sports does not say 'we care about community' — it shows it by appearing at moments where community gathers. For a DTC brand with $500K+ annual marketing budget, the play is: identify one local or regional sports property that your buyer attends (a minor-league team, a marathon, a youth league). Sponsor one season or one event. Do not buy stadium signage; instead, sponsor the community experience (pre-game activation, post-race food, coaching scholarships). Measure brand awareness among attendees 30 days post-event using a simple survey ($2K). If lift is above 15%, expand to two properties. The ROI is not in immediate sales; it is in shifting how a local audience perceives the brand.
WatchWatch for Wayfair to launch a home-based sports experience — e.g., furniture co-branded with a team, or 'watch parties' tied to team merchandise.

Prescription sunglasses brand noted in consumer guide for everyday versatility

Quay was recognized in Consumer365's 2026 guide to best prescription sunglasses for everyday wear, positioning the brand as a fashion-forward option, per PR Newswire.

ReadingThe steal: third-party guides are free distribution if you rank high enough. For an eyewear brand (or any accessory), the play is: identify 10 consumer guides in your category (e.g., 'best sunglasses for outdoor work', 'best reading glasses for home', 'best blue-light frames for office'). Reach out to the editor or guide author with high-res imagery and a 100-word brand story. Do not ask for a mention; offer to be a resource. Provide product at cost if they want to test it. If the brand gets listed, use that mention in every downstream ad (Google, Facebook, email) with a link back to the guide. Attribution data will show if guide readers convert higher than cold traffic.
WatchWatch for Quay to launch a dedicated landing page optimized for prescription-sunglasses search terms, capitalizing on the Consumer365 guide mention.
