Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Filipino skincare hits 4.5M units on TikTok Shop, claims marketplace top rank

Dermorepubliq surpassed 4.5M units sold across its bestsellers and emerged as TikTok Shop Philippines' No. 1 seller, per Manila Standard.

ReadingThe steal: TikTok Shop is not Facebook advertising 2.0 — it's a marketplace with its own conversion logic. Upload the product demo, link to cart, ship the proof of velocity. Brands treating it as a media buy lose to brands treating it as a storefront. Film the 15-second demo, post to the shop feed, watch the SKU move. The video IS the shelf.
MY STASH TAKEThis is the moment regional beauty stopped waiting for distribution and started building it live on the platform where their customer already is. Dermorepubliq didn't hire an agency or negotiate shelf space — they posted a video of the thing working and sold 4.5 million units to prove it. The next six months, watch how many Western beauty brands copy this exact move and land flat because they'll spend on it instead of living inside it.
WatchWatch for Dermorepubliq to launch a second SKU with a different demo mechanic and measure if the velocity stays the same or if the first product's fame carried them.

Facial Device Brand (unnamed, dual SKU holder)
TikTok Shop通信 (Note) ↗

One facial device brand takes 2 of 10 top TikTok Shop spots, 33.67M yen weekly

In the week of September 21-27, 2026, a single facial device brand held two spots in Japan's top 10 TikTok Shop bestsellers, generating 33.67 million yen in sales, with 71% of the top 10's volume driven by video, per TikTok Shop Communications.

ReadingThe steal: if one brand owns two spots in a marketplace's top 10, they are not competing on price — they are owning the demo mechanic. Facial devices are inherently visual (the before/after is the sale). Film the thing working on-face, post in-feed, let the SKU rank. The second SKU in the top 10 suggests they didn't dilute; they stacked — two variants of the same solution, both winning. Run a two-SKU strategy on TikTok Shop: core product and one variant, both with dedicated demo videos, both eligible for the same viral loop.
MY STASH TAKEA facial device brand just turned a single product category into a marketplace duopoly by making better demo videos than anyone else. This is not complex — it's execution. Film the device working, show the result, post it to the shop feed. Most brands post one SKU and wait. This one stacked two. That's the entire edge.
WatchWatch if the same brand launches a third SKU in the top 10 or if the two-SKU stack proves to be the sustainable ceiling.

Litter Robot (Whisker)
Modern Retail ↗

Litter Robot holds pricing on TikTok Shop, uses niche creators over discounts

Whisker, the maker of Litter Robot, entered TikTok Shop to reach younger shoppers using viral product demos and niche content creators while maintaining firm pricing and avoiding deep discounts, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: TikTok Shop rewards velocity, not price. If you discount, you train the buyer to wait for the next discount. Instead, seed the product to 5-10 niche creators in your category (pet tech, home automation, sustainability) at full price. Let them post the unboxing or demo to their feed. The creator's audience buys at full price because they trust the creator, not because you cut margin. Whisker's move: find the 50 micro-creators whose followers already want robotic pet care, send them the box, let them film the thing working, and watch the SKU move without touching your P&L.
MY STASH TAKEMost DTC brands treat TikTok Shop like a fire sale. Whisker treated it like a shelf. No discount, no flash deal — just the right product in front of the right creator's audience. The margin stays intact, the buyer isn't trained to hunt for a lower price next month, and the creator gets the content. It's boring and it works.
WatchWatch if Whisker launches a second product on TikTok Shop using the same creator network or if the single SKU strategy proves more focused.

Nike Running
Modern Retail ↗

Nike running category outperforms amid 4% YoY revenue decline companywide

Nike reported year-over-year revenue declines of 4% in its most recent quarter, but running was identified as one of the few bright spots, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: when a brand's portfolio contracts, the categories that have BOTH a functional proof point and a cultural narrative stay afloat. Running has both: the shoe works (or it doesn't), and there is a visible race calendar that validates the category every weekend. If you make a physical product, find the adjacent category narrative that's already built (fitness, sustainability, craft, collectibility) and embed your product into it. Don't build the narrative — find the calendar that already exists and show up in it. Nike running survives because the marathon season is real, not invented.
MY STASH TAKENike's entire business is underwater except for running. That's not luck — it's because running has a built-in proof mechanism (race times are public, the community is observable, the calendar is external). When you pick your category, ask: is there already a visible calendar or community proving this works? If yes, your product can live in that narrative. If you're inventing the narrative yourself, you're competing on marketing spend instead of proof.
WatchWatch if Nike's running success forces the company to double down on the category or if the broader turnaround stabilizes and dilutes the running advantage.

GS1 Digital Link QR codes replace barcode standard, Sunrise 2027 target set

QRCodeStack now generates GS1 Digital Link QR codes built to URI Syntax 1.7.0, enabling brands to place a single 2D code on packaging. Under Sunrise 2027, retail point-of-sale systems are expected to process these codes by year-end 2027, per USA Today.

ReadingThe steal: by end of 2026, get your QR code strategy live on your packaging. Generate your GS1 Digital Link code, decide what destination it routes to (your product page, a video, a reorder link, a community), and print it on your next production run. When the retail infrastructure updates in 2027, your code is already in market and already training your customer to scan. Most competitors will rush this in late 2027 when the deadline hits. You are 12 months ahead because you printed it now.
MY STASH TAKEThis is the retail infrastructure equivalent of moving before the traffic changes. The barcode is dead in 18 months. If you print your next 100K units without a QR code, you've locked in an asset that's half-useful before it ships. A single code on your box, live today, routes your customer somewhere useful. Film a demo, print the code pointing to that demo, watch the scan rate, and improve the destination. You're training the customer to scan before they're required to.
WatchWatch for the first wave of brands reprinting packaging in Q1 2027 to add codes and the second wave that did it in 2026 and owned the scan data.

TikTok Shop and video-first marketplace adoption spreads across categories

Multiple categories — skincare (Dermorepubliq), facial devices (unnamed), pet care (Litter Robot) — are consolidating wins on TikTok Shop by using video-first product demos and niche creator seeding instead of traditional ads or deep discounts. The pattern holds across Philippines, Japan, and North America, per multiple sources (Manila Standard, TikTok Shop通信, Modern Retail).

ReadingThe steal: if your product has a clear demo state (before/after, unboxing, feature in use), TikTok Shop is your first channel now, not a secondary one. Upload the demo video, link to the shop listing, watch the SKU velocity. If you can't film your product working or unboxing, you're at a disadvantage — rethink the product demo or the packaging reveal to create a visual story. The brands winning are not spending on ads to drive traffic; they are uploading once and letting the video ranking do the work.
MY STASH TAKEA pattern across three continents: video-first product demo wins at velocity and margin on TikTok Shop. If you can't make a 20-second film of your product working, you're building a competitor advantage for someone who can. The next six months, watch which apparel and furniture brands figure out how to demo their products in-video — they'll displace the slow movers.
WatchWatch for the first furniture or apparel brand to crack the demo problem on TikTok Shop and how quickly their SKU velocity matches beauty or pet tech.

Revolve
Retail Dive ↗

Revolve debuts in-house magazine, tests content-to-commerce path

Revolve debuted its own magazine as part of efforts to deepen brand engagement and community, per Retail Dive. The move signals a shift toward owned media and editorial storytelling to drive repeated engagement and purchase intent.

ReadingThe steal: launch an owned-media channel (newsletter, blog, or magazine) that sits alongside your shop. Publish weekly or monthly content that has nothing to do with a sale (style guides, brand story, interviews, behind-the-scenes). Train your customer to return for the content, not the new drop. Link products inside the editorial, but keep the focus on narrative first. Revolve's magazine is a permission channel — once you're subscribed, Revolve owns your email or app attention without competing with a thousand other brands for your feed attention.
MY STASH TAKEMost brands are chasing algorithm wins and losing their audience to feed noise. Revolve is building a magazine — a channel where their customer comes to read, not scroll. It's not first off the floor; it's disciplined. One-person brands can do this: write a monthly letter about the craft or the customer, publish it to Substack, link one product per letter. You're not competing on ad spend — you're building a reason for your customer to think about you when you're not selling.
WatchWatch if Revolve's magazine drives repeat visit frequency higher than email alone or if the editorial content converts to sales at a different rate than paid ads.
