Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Women 35–65 drove Shapermint to $10M in TikTok Shop sales this year

Per Modern Retail, Shapermint is on track to hit $10 million in TikTok Shop sales by building a creator network skewed toward women ages 35–65, departing from TikTok's typical younger user base.

ReadingThe steal: your customer demo and the platform's assumed user base are not the same person. If your buyer skews older, wealthier, or outside the platform's marketing persona, seed creators who match YOUR customer, not the platform's. Shapermint's creators are not famous; they're credible to the 35–65 woman. Run a test this week: find 10 TikTok creators aged 40+ with 10k–100k followers in your category, send them product, ask them to film themselves using it naturally. Track which creator's audience converts highest. That creator becomes your repeating seeded partner.
WatchWatch for Shapermint to test the same creator network on Instagram Reels, where the 35–65 user is even more concentrated.

DoorDash now feeds brands live shelf data and retail purchase signals

Per PYMNTS, DoorDash introduced a platform that provides brands with purchase-based signals from consumer orders and audit-based signals from their on-shelf position, giving brands real-time retail performance data.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell through a delivery platform, ask for access to your own shelf audit data and daily order velocity. Most platforms gate this; DoorDash is opening it. Request a report showing which SKUs are selling fastest, how often you stock out, and which geographic zones move the most volume. Then displace the slowest SKU and double the fast one. Don't wait for a quarterly review — act on weekly data. If your platform won't share, that's friction worth leaving for a platform that will.
WatchWatch for other delivery platforms (Instacart, Amazon Fresh) to launch similar data-sharing tools as competitive parity.

Whole Foods selected 10 emerging brands for its LEAP accelerator cohort

Per Yahoo Finance, Whole Foods Market announced 10 brands selected for the Early Growth cohort of the retailer's Local & Emerging Brands Program (LEAP), providing shelf placement and accelerator support.

ReadingThe steal: if you're a food or beverage brand with proof of concept (6+ months of DTC sales or another strong retail channel), apply to LEAP and similar programs. Don't wait for a distributor to pitch you. Apply directly to the buyer via the brand submission link on their website. When you apply, lead with your repeat-purchase rate and your average order value — not your story. Accelerator buyers want proof that real people buy you twice. Gather that first, then apply.
WatchWatch for Whole Foods to announce the cohort member names and track their velocity on Whole Foods shelves in the following 12 months.

Target's digital holiday catalog now accepts handwritten wish lists

Per Retail Dive, Target's 2026 digital holiday catalog features toys and a new mechanism allowing customers to incorporate handwritten wish lists into the shopping experience.

ReadingThe steal: your catalog, wishlist, or gift-guide experience should have an off-ramp to handwriting. If you sell to gifters (anything with holiday reach), add a 'print this list' or 'write notes here' section in your digital guide. Better yet: let customers upload a photo of a handwritten list and match it to your SKUs. The mechanic isn't about the handwriting; it's about honoring the buyer's existing process instead of forcing a new one. Run a test: offer a printable PDF version of your gift guide with blank lines for notes, then track how many people download it vs. use the digital version.
WatchWatch for other retailers to add capture-the-handwritten-list features in their holiday tools.

BLACKPINK's Lisa limited-edition DualSense drop sold in highly limited quantities via Direct

Per We Are Resonate and Happy Gamer, PlayStation confirmed a Lisa Limited Edition DualSense controller for October 2026, sold in highly limited quantities through PlayStation Direct, with preorders opening Oct 2 and global launch Oct 30.

ReadingThe steal: tie a limited physical drop to a specific external event (album release, film premiere, athlete milestone) and sell it through ONE channel only. The single-channel constraint manufactures scarcity without lying about inventory. Set preorders two weeks before ship, announce quantity caps in advance, and communicate sell-out status live. This week, identify one external moment in your industry (a competitor's launch, a seasonal event, a creator's milestone) and sketch out a 200-unit limited SKU tied to that moment, sold only via your website.
WatchWatch for PlayStation to sell out within 48 hours and for resale activity on secondary markets.

Skipped orders cost subscription retailers more than cancellations, per YOCTO

Per Retail Insider, YOCTO founder George Kapernaros noted that skipped orders — pauses that do not result in cancellation — cost subscription retailers more than outright cancellations because the customer stays on the list but generates no revenue.

ReadingThe steal: in your subscription dashboard, find the skip-or-pause rate — the percentage of customers who paused but did not cancel in the last 90 days. If it exceeds 5%, you have a hidden churn problem. Run a test: send paused subscribers a surprise SKU (a new flavor, a bonus item, or a discounted first reorder) with a note that their account is 'on pause and waiting for them.' Track reactivation rate. If fewer than 40% reactivate, your pause mechanic is a parking lot, not a bridge. Consider removing the pause option and instead offering a 'reduce frequency' option (e.g., every 6 weeks instead of 4) to keep them buying at a lower rate.
WatchWatch for subscription platforms to highlight skip-rate analytics as a KPI alongside churn.

Gap launches AI-assisted shopping tool, three decades after first website

Per Retail Dive, Gap unveiled an AI-assisted shopping tool, marking a digital evolution three decades after the brand first launched its website.

ReadingThe steal: if you're a legacy or mature brand, don't lead with the feature; lead with the elapsed time. 'After two decades, we finally asked our customers what they actually wanted — and built it.' This reframes late adoption as thoughtfulness, not slowness. If you're introducing a tool or feature that competitors launched years ago, anchor the story to the customer insight you uncovered, not the feature release. Test a launch email this week: instead of 'introducing new AI shopping,' write 'we listened for 30 years and built this.' See if the 'finally' narrative outperforms the 'innovation' narrative in open rate.
WatchWatch for Gap to measure adoption and reveal what the AI-assisted tool's conversion lift is.
