Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

DoorDash gives brands live shelf data from millions of orders in real time

DoorDash introduced a platform that feeds brands purchase-based signals from consumer orders and audit-based signals from shelf scans, giving packaged-goods makers visibility into what's moving at retail without waiting for weekly reports, per PYMNTS.

ReadingThe steal: your competitor is making restocking calls three weeks from now based on last month's numbers. You can make restocking calls today based on what moved yesterday. The play is not to build a data team; it's to plug into an existing audit network that's already moving. Pitch your broker to audit via DoorDash, then build your reorder schedule around live signal, not forecast.
MY STASH TAKEThis is the end of the monthly sell-sheet. A brand that wakes up every morning and reads yesterday's shelf from 100 storefronts has a 21-day faster decision loop than the competitor waiting for the distributor call. That's enough to restock the winner before the loser even knows they're out. The play is small: stop buying reports. Start reading the API.
WatchWatch for brands using live shelf data to move inventory between stores in real time rather than waiting for the quarterly rebalance.

GS1 Digital Link QR codes are now live for Sunrise 2027 retail compliance

QRCodeStack now generates GS1 Digital Link QR codes compliant with URI Syntax 1.7.0, enabling brands to place one 2D code on packaging that carries product data, pricing, and supply chain info. Retail point-of-sale systems are preparing to process these codes by the end of 2027 under the Sunrise 2027 initiative, per USA Today.

ReadingThe steal: do not wait for the POS system upgrade. Print a test batch with a 2D code and measure what happens when the code links to a landing page instead of just a barcode. The store scanner might not read it yet, but a customer phone can. A QR that links to recipe, sustainability proof, or a referral code becomes a data-capture and retention tool three years before the register can read it. The play: encode supply-chain provenance or membership benefits in the 2D code, make the phone readable version live now, ship test SKUs to early-adopter retailers.
MY STASH TAKEThe company that ships a 2D code in 2026 and learns what customers do with it will own the data layer when the POS upgrades in 2027. Everybody else ships a code they never tested. The play is dead simple: test it before you have to.
WatchWatch for a CPG brand to print a 2D code linking to a recipe or sustainability story and measure QR scans as a loyalty proxy.

Free People ceded creative control to Willow and saw cultural co-authorship move faster than a brand-led campaign

CMO Jack Reynolds at Urban Outfitters-owned Free People explained at Advertising Week why the retailer hands over creative direction to musicians and artists instead of building campaigns around them. The move prioritizes cultural relevance over brand messaging, per Marketing Dive.

ReadingThe steal: do not brief the influencer on your campaign. Instead, ask them what they would make if they had your product budget. Then fund what they want to make. The campaign will feel less polished — and that's the point. The audience trusts the artist more than they trust your brand voice reading through the artist. The play is to shift budget from paid ads featuring the creator to production funding behind the creator's own vision.
MY STASH TAKEThe instinct is to control the narrative. The math says the opposite: let the artist control it and you'll move twice as fast because you're not in the approval loop anymore. Free People saw that cultural relevance is faster than brand messaging. The play is to stop hiring talent and start funding vision.
WatchWatch for brands to build co-authorship clauses into influencer contracts that require the creator to own final edit on content before posting.

59% of corporate gift recipients reject generic gifts; brands still spend $300+ billion on guesswork

A 2026 Packed with Purpose and Harris Poll study found that 59% of U.S. corporate gift recipients would rather receive nothing than a generic gift, despite companies spending over $300 billion annually on corporate gifts, per Yahoo Finance.

ReadingThe steal: do not sell your product as a corporate gift. Sell a gifting service that requires the buyer to input recipient data (role, interest, location) and then automatically curate which SKU lands in which box. The personalization layer is the product now. The play: offer brands a tiered gifting menu, not a SKU list, where each tier maps to recipient profiles they provide. Automate the matching, ship the proof of thoughtfulness.
MY STASH TAKEEvery brand in CPG thinks they could own corporate gifting if they just got into the door. The real insight is that nobody wants a generic gift, so the winner is not the brand with the most SKUs — it's the brand that makes the buyer feel like a hero for choosing something that feels specific. That's a service, not a product.
WatchWatch for a CPG brand to launch a gift-personalization API that lets corporate buyers upload employee data and auto-match to SKUs by profile.

Fall Prime Big Deals Days drove early holiday sales through bundles and bulk buys on essentials

Amazon's fall Prime Big Deals Days helped sellers kick off early holiday sales as shoppers chased discounts and bundles, stocking up on essentials before the peak season, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: the discount is not the lever. The end date is. A bundle that's available for 72 hours moves twice the volume of the same bundle at a 5% lower price running year-round. The play is to run a 72-hour bundle drop with a clear 'last order date' and measure bulk order size (orders over $200) instead of traffic. If bulk orders lift, the time gate worked.
MY STASH TAKEA sale that runs forever is not a sale; it's a price. A sale that ends on Tuesday is an event. Amazon proved the event model works at scale for sellers who bundle SKUs and create urgency. The play is simple: tier your bundles by order size, set a 72-hour window, ship it mid-week so orders arrive before the weekend.
WatchWatch for Amazon sellers to run back-to-back 72-hour bundle drops in November and measure if chained promotions lift repeat orders versus single-event promotions.

ChatGPT ads show promise but high costs mean holiday budgets stay with Google and Meta

Brands are testing OpenAI's ChatGPT ads, but weak early sales and high costs mean most holiday budgets are not shifting away from Google or Meta, per Modern Retail. The pattern reflects broader hesitation about new ad platforms until conversion economics prove out.

ReadingThe steal: do not wait for the platform to lower its costs. You lower your costs by testing small ($500/week) in an off-season (January) when the algorithm is hungry for data. By the time everyone else wants to test (Q3), you already have conversion benchmarks and you're bidding on the platform's coldest inventory at the best rates. The play: allocate $2,000 to ChatGPT ads in January, measure CAC vs. Google, and if it's within 20%, go to 30% budget allocation in July.
MY STASH TAKEThe brand that tests new platforms in the off-season gets the best rates and the warmest algorithm because nobody else is bidding. By the time the market wakes up, you're already profitable on it. The play is to be an early tester, but only in the months when the platform is desperate for volume.
WatchWatch for brands to publish ChatGPT CAC benchmarks in Q1 and see whether a second wave of adoption follows if the numbers hold.

Executive turnover in retail media signals leadership fracture and unclear ROI path

A shakeup at Albertsons' retail media business has put a spotlight on consistent executive turnover across retail media networks. Analysts note that leadership churn reflects broader uncertainty about profit models and advertiser ROI, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: watch the retail media networks' earnings calls in Q4 and Q1. If brands are increasing spend, the turnover was just normal transitions. If brands are decreasing spend, the turnover is structural — it means the platform is losing confidence in its own ROI story. The play is to demand a 90-day performance guarantee from any retail media partner before committing annual budget. If they won't guarantee it, they don't believe in the platform's own efficacy.
MY STASH TAKETurnover in a platform usually means the people who built it lost faith. It's a whisper, not a diagnosis, but it's worth listening to. Before you commit budget to any retail media network, ask the new leadership what the last leadership team got wrong. If they can't answer that clearly, you're the next team to leave.
WatchWatch for retail media networks to publish first-year ROI data for brands as a way to stabilize leadership and rebuild advertiser confidence.
