Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Japanese facial device brand (TikTok Shop)
note.com (short_movie_jp) ↗

Facial device brand hit 82.5 million yen in September on TikTok Shop Japan

Per the weekly TikTok Shop ranking, a single facial device brand dominated the top two positions in Japan's TikTok Shop market, accounting for 82.5 million yen in September 2026 sales, with beauty products filling 7 of the top 10 spots and 73% of total category sales.

ReadingThe steal: TikTok Shop live selling is not a channel you test someday — it's a channel where single SKUs are hitting mid-seven-figure sales in a week, and the performance is measurable, week-to-week. If you ship beauty or wellness to Japan (or any TikTok-native market), the live-stream slot on TikTok Shop is not optional inventory; it's the primary shelf. The play: run a weekly live slot, demo the product in real time, cap quantity to create urgency, and measure conversion per session. Most brands still treat TikTok Shop as a 'nice to have' channel; the data shows it's the channel.
WatchWatch for this facial device brand to announce expansion into Southeast Asia TikTok Shop markets (Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines), where live beauty selling is already outpacing Japan.

Skipped orders cost subscription brands more than cancellations, per YOCTO founder

George Kapernaros, founder of YOCTO (a Klaviyo Elite Master agency specializing in subscription and DTC retention), published analysis showing that skipped orders represent a larger financial loss to subscription retailers than outright cancellations — a metric most retention teams ignore.

ReadingThe steal: audit your subscription dashboard now — separate skipped orders from cancellations and measure the revenue impact of skips over 90 days. Most platforms (Klaviyo, Justuno, Subbly) log skips as a secondary event; you are almost certainly under-measuring them. The play: build a recovery email series that fires 48 hours before a scheduled skip (not after cancellation). Test messaging that removes friction: 'want to delay this month?' vs. 'pause your sub'. Skipped orders are lower-intent than cancellations; a single friction-removal touch re-activates them faster.
WatchWatch for Klaviyo to roll out a native 'skip recovery' workflow template in Q1 2027, signaling this metric is now mainstream.

Marketers using in-store retail media
Shelby Report ↗

43% of marketers say they underutilize in-store retail media, per IAB and Grocery TV

An IAB and Grocery TV survey found that while marketers increasingly view in-store retail media as a full-funnel channel, 43% report they are not fully utilizing it — indicating a significant adoption and capability gap.

ReadingThe steal: if your brand is in any major grocery or convenience retail partner, you have inventory of in-store media placements you are NOT selling into. Most brands reserve in-store media for new launches or holiday promotions; the 43% gap means there is open floor space and digital real estate going unused. The play: audit your retailer's media kit (most majors — Kroger, Albertsons, CVS, Walgreens — now have a retail media arm). Reserve Q1 2027 placements for a lower-ticket SKU or a secondary product; measure redemption with a SKU-specific discount code or QR link. This is not brand-building spend; it's conversion spend, cheaper than digital paid because shelf proximity is your distribution advantage.

College-aged creators (Glossy Campus community)

College creators are moving from Shein and malls to Amazon and ShopMy affiliate platforms

Glossy's roundtable with five college-aged creators from the Glossy Campus community revealed a shift in where Gen Z creators are shopping and which affiliate platforms they are using — away from Shein and traditional retail, toward Amazon and ShopMy.

ReadingThe steal: if you are a mid-market DTC brand (apparel, beauty, home) trying to seed product to college creators, the old play (send to TikTok influencers, hope for a haul video) is fading. The new play: identify college creators who already have ShopMy links in their bios, and offer affiliate commission if they add your Amazon storefront or your direct-sale link to their ShopMy profile. Most college creators now expect affiliate revenue, not free product. A $100 affiliate commission is cheaper than seeding product and waiting for organic mention. Also: college creators are curating fewer, higher-consideration purchases, not bulk hauls; your product is competing against 5–10 other brands in a single creator's ShopMy feed, not standing alone.
WatchWatch ShopMy's creator partnership numbers in Q1 2027; if they announce brand partnerships or retailer integrations, it signals this platform is moving from creator tool to DTC discovery engine.

Virtual try-on launched on ChatGPT, expanding AI-powered shopping tools

OpenAI announced a virtual try-on feature on ChatGPT, allowing shoppers to use generative AI to visualize products before purchase — a capability that moves product discovery and trial simulation into conversational AI.

ReadingThe steal: if you ship apparel, footwear, or accessories, ChatGPT's virtual try-on is not a feature to test next year — it's live now and your competitors are already seeding product. The play: reach out to OpenAI's partnership program (or wait for them to request your product catalog) and get your SKUs into ChatGPT's training data with high-resolution product images and size/fit notes. When a shopper asks ChatGPT 'show me this brand in black,' your product appears. The ROI is unmeasurable right now (no direct link-through), but the discovery value is enormous — you are in the conversation before the Google search.
WatchWatch for ChatGPT to announce affiliate revenue sharing or product commission in Q1 2027, turning ChatGPT into a discovery and conversion channel.

Luxury shoppers are still spending but getting more selective on price and category

Glossy reporting from luxury merchants at Kirna Zabête, Bloomingdale's, and Harrods indicates that luxury shoppers continue to spend, but they are narrowing their selections — prioritizing fewer, higher-confidence purchases over volume.

ReadingThe steal: if you are a luxury or premium brand, this is not a signal to discount; it's a signal to heighten storytelling around 'worth.' Luxury buyers in 2026 are buying narrative and provenance, not volume. The play: audit your product storytelling — every SKU should have a 'why this costs premium' story tied to material, craft, or scarcity. If your story is 'it's luxury,' you are losing to brands with a story. Also: test a limited-edition or 'investment piece' posture on your core SKU; luxury shoppers are more likely to buy one thing they believe in than three things they are unsure of.

NIOD entered Sephora in August, testing frequent product reformulation as a model

Glossy reported that NIOD, the second brand from Estée Lauder-owned Deciem, entered Sephora in August 2026 and is running a model where hero products are reformed regularly — asking whether new product development must always be expensive and complex.

ReadingThe steal: most brands treat their hero SKU as untouchable; any change risks customer backlash. NIOD is testing the inverse: frequent reformulation with transparent storytelling ('same hero, improved formula') drives perception of innovation without the launch cost. The play: if you have a hero SKU that has been unchanged for 18+ months, audit the ingredients or packaging for one low-risk reformulation — improved delivery format, natural alternative, or sustainability angle. Run a 'reformulated hero' campaign that frames the change as benefit to the customer, not cost-cutting. Sephora's buy-in suggests this is no longer a niche experiment.
WatchWatch NIOD's Sephora sales and customer retention rates in Q4 2026; if reformulation drives repeat purchase higher than peer brands at Sephora, the model will go mainstream.
