Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Facial device category hit 82.5 million yen in one month on TikTok Shop

Per a note.com analysis of September 2026 TikTok Shop Japan data, the #1 product — a facial device — generated 82.5 million yen in a single month, with beauty accounting for 7 of the top 10 spots and 73% of total category revenue.

ReadingThe steal: beauty hardware (facial devices, LED masks, skin tools) is moving through TikTok Shop's live-commerce format in volumes that rival traditional e-commerce and wholesale combined. A brand selling a $200–800 device can skip the influencer middleman entirely and sell direct through live shows on TikTok Shop. The lever is not the product — it's the format. Live selling removes friction for high-touch product demos; buyers see the demo, ask questions in real time, and convert in the same session. For a one-person brand or small team with a beauty hardware product, this is a documented path to $1M+ monthly revenue in a single geography without paid ads or wholesale.
MY STASH TAKEThis number landed in my inbox and I had to triple-check it. A single product category doing 82.5 million yen in one month on one platform in one country is the kind of signal most brands in the West are still ignoring because they're fixated on Instagram and influencer seeding. The beauty-hardware category on TikTok Shop is like watching a warehouse sell out in real time, live, every single day. If you make anything in beauty or wellness hardware, your direct-to-consumer playbook is not 2024 anymore.
WatchWatch for Japanese beauty hardware brands testing TikTok Shop live selling in US and EU markets in Q1 2027.

Free People ceded creative control to Willow; CMO calls it cultural co-authorship

Per Marketing Dive's report on Advertising Week, Free People's CMO Jack Reynolds explained the brand's approach to working with musician Willow: instead of handing a brief to the celebrity, Free People gave Willow creative authority over the collaboration itself.

ReadingThe steal: celebrity partnerships fail when the brand controls the narrative and the celebrity is just a name attached. Reverse it. Bring the celebrity into the creative room before you finalize the product or the campaign. Let them reshape the brief. The result is not a celebrity endorsement — it's a product that the celebrity actually believes in and will defend. For a small brand with access to a micro-celebrity or a creator with real influence in your niche, this means: instead of paying for an Instagram post, invite them to co-design the product or the packaging. They become a stakeholder, not a contractor. Their audience feels the difference.
MY STASH TAKEThe buzzword is 'co-authorship' but the real win is simpler: the celebrity stops being a hired hand and starts being a believer. When Willow shaped that collaboration, she was already sold. Her audience gets that. There's no performance in it. For a brand that can't afford a $500K influencer contract, this is the play — find someone with real reach in your world and let them touch the work before it ships.

QRCodeStack enabled GS1 Digital Link QR codes ahead of Sunrise 2027 retail shift

Per USA Today press release, QRCodeStack now generates GS1 Digital Link QR codes built to URI Syntax 1.7.0 standard. This positions brands to comply with the Sunrise 2027 initiative, which aims for all retail point-of-sale systems to process 2D barcodes by end of 2027, per Forbes.

ReadingThe steal: Sunrise 2027 is not optional — it is mandated by GS1 globally. Every brand selling through traditional retail must have a 2D barcode that works with the new POS systems by end of 2027. Most brands have not even heard of Sunrise 2027 yet. The brands that move now — generating their 2D codes, testing them with early retail partners, embedding them on packaging — will ship without friction in 2028. The ones that wait until late 2027 will scramble, reprint, and miss shelf time. For any brand that ships through grocery, pharmacy, or department-store retail: audit your barcode supplier and confirm they can output GS1 Digital Link QR codes. Test them now.
MY STASH TAKESunrise 2027 is the kind of infrastructure shift that nobody notices until it bites them. It's not sexy — it's a barcode thing. But if you're a brand planning to ship retail in 2027 or 2028, this is the one box you need to check right now, before you reprint packaging or finalize your POS data structure. QRCodeStack moving first means the infrastructure exists. Most brand teams don't even know Sunrise 2027 is coming.
WatchWatch for major retailers (Walmart, Target, CVS) to begin enforcing 2D barcode requirements on incoming vendor shipments in Q2 2027.

E.l.f. Brands pushes into fragrance, expanding from beauty hardware into scent

Per Retail Dive's weekly closeout, E.l.f. Brands announced a fragrance expansion. The move signals the brand is no longer confined to beauty tools and color — it is scaling horizontally into adjacent beauty categories.

ReadingThe steal: when a brand owns a customer base in one category, the fastest path to revenue growth is not deeper penetration in that category — it is horizontal expansion into adjacent, higher-margin categories. E.l.f. can ship fragrance at $20–35 per unit to customers who already buy at $8–15 per tool or serum. The customer is trained, the checkout is frictionless, and the margin is thicker. For a one-person brand in beauty, tools, wellness, or skincare: map the three adjacent categories your customer already buys (usually from different brands). Test a product in one of those categories as a loyalty add-on or limited drop. Do not wait to build a new brand — extend the one you have.
MY STASH TAKEE.l.f. is not trying to compete with Estée Lauder on prestige fragrance positioning. They are going to ship affordable fragrance to a customer who already knows and trusts the E.l.f. brand. The customer is the unfair advantage. If you've built a loyal customer base in one product category, a fragrance launch is not a brand risk — it is a checklist item.
WatchWatch for E.l.f. to bundle fragrance with existing beauty-tool purchases in Q1 2027.

Virtual try-on launched on ChatGPT, enabling real-time product visualization

Per Retail Dive, virtual try-on functionality launched on ChatGPT, allowing users to visualize products before purchase. This reduces return friction for apparel and accessories by letting buyers see fit and color in real-world context.

ReadingThe steal: the highest-friction moment in apparel and beauty e-commerce is checkout — specifically, the moment a buyer has to bet money on how something will look on their body or face. Virtual try-on does not eliminate returns, but it cuts uncertainty. A brand can add a ChatGPT integration to its product pages and let buyers preview before checkout. The mechanism is simple: user uploads a selfie or photo, ChatGPT overlays the product, user sees the fit. The brand that integrates this first in their category gets the conversion lift. For a small apparel or beauty brand, this is not a custom build — it is a plug-in. Add it to your product page or checkout flow this week.
MY STASH TAKEVirtual try-on sounds like a feature that should have existed five years ago, and now it does. The friction point is real — people do not want to buy a dress or a lipstick they can't see on their actual body. ChatGPT's version is free-to-use and low-friction. Any brand selling apparel, footwear, or color cosmetics can direct traffic to ChatGPT's try-on tool or build their own integration. The return rate should drop.
WatchWatch for ChatGPT's virtual try-on to become a standard API that non-Sephora brands can embed in their own storefronts by Q2 2027.

College-Aged Creators

College creators are moving from Shein to Amazon and ShopMy, away from mall retail

Per Glossy's Pop Newsletter roundtable with five college-aged creators from the Glossy Campus community, young creators are abandoning Shein and traditional mall shopping in favor of Amazon and ShopMy. This signals a shift in where Gen-Z affiliate commissions and personal purchases flow.

ReadingThe steal: if your brand is seeding product to college-aged or Gen-Z creators for affiliate commissions, do not assume they will promote through Shein anymore. These creators are actively choosing Amazon, ShopMy, and other affiliate platforms. The lever is not the product — it is the payout and the platform trust. A brand can offer the same product on Amazon with a affiliate commission structure, and creators will push it there instead of to Shein. For a small brand selling apparel, accessories, or beauty: build your affiliate program on Amazon or ShopMy first, then seed to college creators. Let them choose the platform they already trust. Your affiliate payout becomes the incentive, not the brand status.
MY STASH TAKEShein's creator flywheel was the most efficient acquisition engine for affordable fashion for three years. Now it is cracking. The creator demographic is pragmatic — they go where the money and trust are. Amazon's affiliate program is unsexy but reliable. ShopMy is built for creators. If you are a brand trying to reach college-aged buyers through creator seeding, the platform shift matters more than the product fit right now. Meet creators on the platforms they already use for their own shopping and monetization.

NIOD entered Sephora in August by reformulating hero products without over-complication

Per Glossy's podcast on why Estée Lauder-owned NIOD keeps reformulating its hero products: the brand entered Sephora in August and shifted from complex multi-step protocols to streamlined formulations that retail customers expect.

ReadingThe steal: when a direct-to-consumer brand enters traditional retail (Sephora, Ulta, department stores), the customer expectation shifts. DTC customers expect complexity and education; retail customers expect simplicity and speed. NIOD recognized this and reformulated rather than force the DTC protocol onto a retail customer. For a DTC brand planning a retail expansion: do not copy your DTC product line to the shelf. Test a simplified, retail-friendly version first. The mechanism is not a discount — it is a format change. A three-step routine that ships in jars instead of pipettes, single-ingredient hero products instead of 30-ingredient serums, and clear shelf-side education. This moves retail velocity without cannibalizing DTC pricing.
MY STASH TAKEThis is whisper territory, but it matters. NIOD's move into Sephora is a case study in what happens when a cult-status DTC brand realizes that retail and DTC customers are different animals. The brand did not betray its base by reformulating — it expanded the base by meeting retail customers where they are. If you are a DTC brand considering a wholesale or retail partnership, this is the pattern to watch: your DTC customer loves complexity; your retail customer wants results. Both can be true.
WatchWatch for NIOD to test limited-edition retail-exclusive formulations in Q1 2027.
