Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Shifted 10% of ad spend from Meta to creator brands, per Modern Retail

Modern Retail documented that Ruggable reallocated approximately 10% of its overall ad spend away from performance channels like Meta toward brand-building channels, including influencers and connected TV, starting in August.

ReadingThe steal: most DTC brands treat influencer spend like a B-list channel—a tactic to test when performance channels flatten. Ruggable is treating it like a core media tier. The move is not 'add influencers to the mix'; it's 'move 10% of performance budget into the hands of creators who sell to their own audience.' Pick one performance channel (Facebook, Pinterest, Google) and reallocate 5–10% of monthly spend to three to five ShopMy creators or creator-commerce platforms in your category. Measure it as a brand channel, not a promo. Run for 90 days before evaluating.
WatchWatch for Ruggable to report whether that 10% reallocation improves customer CAC or lifetime value by Q1 2027.

Added TikTok brands like Mellow Sleep to home category to revive sales

Modern Retail reported that Target recently added TikTok-favorite brands, including bedding line Mellow Sleep, to its home category as part of a strategy to refresh and revive that department.

ReadingThe steal: don't buy into trending home décor from legacy brands. Find the top three TikTok-native home or lifestyle brands in your subcategory (use TikTok Shop data or Pinterest Trends), contact them directly with a shelf order, and lead with the number of followers their content already has in your region. You're not asking them to trust retail; you're offering them the physical endpoint for demand they're already driving. The pitch is 'your audience is in our store; let's put you on the shelf they're already walking.' Target moved this fast because Mellow Sleep had built-in audience momentum—zero traditional advertising required.
WatchWatch for other big-box retailers to copy this model and begin sourcing directly from creator-led brands instead of waiting for distributors.

Diversified beyond beach bag with Go Tote to capture commuters and travelers

Modern Retail documented that Bogg is expanding beyond its signature EVA beach bag by introducing the Go Tote to appeal to commuters, athletes, and travelers—a move to widen its addressable market beyond seasonal beach use.

ReadingThe steal: don't expand into an unrelated category. Expand into a new use occasion for the same core product. Bogg didn't invent a laptop bag or a gym tote from scratch; it applied its existing material and modular design to commute and travel. If your flagship product has a seasonal or single-use bias, audit your product for three secondary use occasions where the core value prop (durability, modularity, easy clean) still applies. Build one variant for commute, one for gym, one for travel. Price them at +15–20% over the original. Launch in Q1 to build velocity into slower seasons.

Debuted mobile app with targeted marketing campaign to drive adoption

Retail Dive reported that Bealls launched a mobile app and paired it with a marketing campaign designed to drive customer adoption and engagement.

ReadingThe steal: the app alone changes nothing without a push. Bealls paired the launch with a campaign, which means they're paying for awareness and redemption of the app itself, not just hoping customers find it. If you have a direct-to-consumer base or a retail partnership, launching an app should come with a co-op or in-store marketing budget. Don't build the app and then ask 'how do we get people to download it.' Reserve 20–30% of your app development budget for the first 90 days of paid promotion: email to your list, in-store signage, SMS, and one influencer partnership. Measure DAU and repeat app opens, not total installs.
WatchWatch for Bealls to report app usage data and whether app-native offers drive higher repeat rates than email or SMS.

Upgraded myDay app with AI-backed insights to improve store operations efficiency

Retail Dive reported that Target upgraded its myDay app with newly customizable home-screen functionality and plans to add AI-backed insights to help store employees work more efficiently.

ReadingThe steal: the best way to improve store conversion and inventory turns is to give floor staff real-time context. If you have retail partners or company stores, audit how your floor team accesses inventory, pricing, and task prioritization. Build a simple dashboard or exportable field report that shows: (1) current inventory depth, (2) customer segments visiting today, (3) task queue by priority. Use Shopify or Klaviyo webhooks to push real-time stock status to your retail partners' internal systems. One dashboard replaces 10 manual checks per shift.
WatchWatch for Target to report whether the AI-backed insights lower labor costs or improve inventory accuracy by measurable percentage.

Subscription retention breaks by box three; email strategy critical to recovery

Industry analysis notes that subscription retention has a known breaking point: box one hooks customers via novelty and welcome incentives, box two lands while the welcome discount remains emotionally fresh, but by box three many programs lose customers, indicating a retention crisis point that email strategy must address.

ReadingThe steal: if you operate a subscription model, map your churn week-by-week from signup to box three. For most brands, churn spikes after box two ships. Deploy a segmented email sequence starting at day 18–21 (after box two arrives, before box three ships): email one personalizes box three based on box-one choices; email two offers an upgrade tier or gift card redemption; email three is pure social proof—customer photos using the product. Run this sequence with conditional logic based on box-one product selection. Measure weekly churn rate pre- and post-sequence. Expected lift: 8–15% retention improvement at box three.
WatchWatch for subscription-first brands to publish retention curves and share the box-three intervention strategies that stopped churn.

Marketers (survey pattern via IAB and Grocery TV)
The Shelby Report (IAB/Grocery TV research) ↗

43% of marketers underutilize in-store retail media despite seeing full-funnel value

IAB and Grocery TV research found that marketers acknowledge a full-funnel role for in-store retail media but admit that 43 percent of respondents say they underutilize the channel—indicating a gap between perceived value and actual deployment.

ReadingThe steal: if you have SKUs in grocery or retail, in-store media is now table stakes but still fragmented across vendors. Start with one retailer and one high-velocity category (e.g., endcap or checkout). Negotiate a six-week test: a single digital display or standee with rotating creative tied to email sends. Measure foot traffic (via the retailer's foot-traffic app or point-of-sale spike during the display window) and conversion lift. Cost is low ($500–2000 for six weeks); the learning is high. Most brands delay because they assume complexity. The pilot proves it is not.
WatchWatch for major retailers to launch unified in-store media ordering platforms that consolidate shelf, digital, and checkout inventory into a single buying interface.
