Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Ulta partnership expands to all stores for holidays, testing retail bundling at scale

Bath & Body Works expanded its partnership with Ulta Beauty to all Ulta stores for the holiday season, per Retail Dive, shifting from a limited test to full-store rollout.

ReadingThe steal: instead of defending your own retail footprint during holidays, rent the foot traffic of a higher-frequency beauty retailer. Bath & Body Works does not compete with Ulta on cosmetics; they sit adjacent. The full-store rollout means every Ulta shopper sees the brand at point-of-sale when they're already in transaction mode. For a physical brand, this trades rent and labor for co-tenancy fees and a fraction of Ulta's existing checkout velocity. Run this play: identify a retailer that serves your customer but does not compete on category, pilot in 3–5 flagships, measure basket lift and attach rate, then scale to all doors during your peak 6–8 week window.
WatchWatch for Bath & Body Works to test gift-bundling exclusives made for Ulta checkout — smaller SKUs, higher margin, lower SKU drag.

Midnight launch event for limited-edition Switch 2 Zelda console, managed scarcity at scale

Best Buy announced midnight launch events on November 5, 2026, for limited quantities of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 console, per MSN.

ReadingThe steal: the midnight launch is not a logistics choice — it's a demand architecture. You're converting a staggered, diffuse demand curve into a single-point spike. This means less inventory risk, more velocity per unit, and free social proof (the line is the ad). For a physical brand with a time-sensitive release, this works only if you have a partner with physical locations and enough product scarcity that the event feels real. Run this play: name the exact date and time, cap the first batch at a number that forces line formation (usually 60–70% of expected day-one demand), partner with a retailer that has foot traffic density, and seed the launch to one or two micro-communities that will show up at midnight and film it.
WatchWatch for Best Buy to limit online pre-orders and force in-store midnight-only purchase to drive physical traffic.

Music collaborations with Zara Larsson and Olivia Rodrigo position resale as lifestyle, not just commerce

Depop is centering music in its marketing strategy through collaborations with artists including Zara Larsson and Olivia Rodrigo, using drops to connect creator fanbases to resale, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: instead of advertising resale to a cold audience, Depop uses the artist's existing fandom to drive first-time users into the app. The music is not promotional window-dressing; it's the entry point. For a secondary-market or community-driven brand, this works because fans will show up for the artist's exclusive items, not for the platform's promise. Run this play: find an artist whose fanbase matches your buyer (not by demographic — by mindset: collectors, trendsetters, thrift-forward), offer them a limited drop or exclusive item availability, and let them announce the collab on their channels first. You provide the platform and logistics; they provide the audience.
WatchWatch for Depop to announce artist-specific resale bundles or artist-curated vintage collections.

Luxury eyewear taps Dita founders to expand into new materials and buyer segments

Morgenthal Frederics, known for buffalo horn frames, is expanding its acetate and titanium offerings under the leadership of Dita founders John Juniper and Jer Chin, per Glossy.

ReadingThe steal: when you need to open a new category without abandoning your core, bring in a founder or creative leader from a brand that already owns that category. This is cheaper and faster than building credibility from scratch, and it signals to your existing customers that the expansion is intentional, not desperate. Morgenthal Frederics doesn't have to convince buyers that acetate eyewear is luxury — Dita already did. Run this play: identify the adjacent category you want to own, find a founder or designer from a respected brand in that space who shares your aesthetic, and announce them as the creative lead for the new line. Let them do the talking; they carry the brand equity you need.
WatchWatch for Morgenthal Frederics to price the new acetate and titanium lines at a lower price point than buffalo horn to signal accessibility.

Lip gloss phone case merchandise expands beauty into fashion accessory category

Rhode Beauty launched a viral lip gloss phone case in 2024 that turned beauty products into fashion accessories, per Glossy, expanding the product into a new category beyond cosmetics.

ReadingThe steal: merge two existing product categories into one SKU that neither category owns. This creates a novelty that lives in the gap — it's not cosmetics-packaging, it's a new category. For a beauty or personal-care brand, this means identifying a complementary object your customer already carries (phone, keys, bag, mirror) and designing a version that integrates your core product. Run this play: audit the top 5 objects your customer carries daily, pick one (usually the phone), design a version that makes your product functional within that object's use case, launch in limited quantities, and let the novelty create press. Price at 2–3x the standalone product to recover for the R&D and to signal that this is a collectible, not a commodity.
WatchWatch for Rhode to announce a matching lip gloss phone case in seasonal colors or limited runs.

43% of marketers underutilize in-store retail media; full-funnel opportunity emerging

IAB and Grocery TV research found that marketers see a full-funnel role for in-store retail media, though 43 percent report underutilizing the channel, per The Shelby Report.

ReadingThe steal: retail media is the cheapest full-funnel ad buy available because you're reaching customers already in-store and transaction-ready. Most brands use it only for end-cap promotions; the move is to use it for product discovery, trial sampling, and loyalty enrollment at the shelf. Run this play: instead of a discount offer on the shelf-edge screen, test a limited-time bundle offer or a loyalty-card enrollment prompt. Measure attach rate and repeat purchase, not just units sold at that moment. The real win is converting a shelf-browser into a repeat buyer, not selling one more box today.
WatchWatch for retail media networks to begin offering data partnerships that connect shelf exposure to repeat purchase and loyalty enrollment.

Returns to metaverse on avatar-based gaming platform, testing virtual cosmetics try-on

E.l.f. Cosmetics returned to the metaverse through an avatar-based gaming platform, per Marketing Dive, positioning virtual cosmetics application as a testing ground for real-world purchases.

ReadingThe steal: do not sell into the metaverse — embed your product into a native use case where it already makes sense. E.l.f. is not asking gamers to visit a virtual store; they're making cosmetics a core part of avatar design. For a personal-care or beauty brand, find a gaming or avatar platform that your customer already uses, add your product as a design tool, measure virtual-to-real conversion (players who buy the virtual look and purchase the real product within 30 days), and scale if the conversion rate exceeds 8–12%.
WatchWatch for E.l.f. to announce exclusive colorways available only through the gaming platform.
