Why Banks Are Losing the Room

The fee story and the rate story are well covered. The vendor estate banks and their suppliers gorged on in the eighties and nineties is still running, largely unexamined, and it is the part that will not survive scrutiny.

The vendor estate banks and suppliers built in the eighties and nineties is still running on original agreements: accountability that cannot be outsourced, regulators conceding banks cannot leave, oversight by questionnaire rather than custody record, and permissions over shareholder data written before the data existed.

A Model Reads What You Wrote Down. A Person Sees What You Did.

With every house now worried about what AI will do to its data, the honest answer is that the brand is the more exposed of the two — and neither risk arrived with the model. In military-heavy regions, the data risk runs higher still. Buy the AI. Govern the path. Keep the boots on the ground.

Data is at stake in a way that is measurable, priced and insurable. Brand is at stake in a way that is none of those things. A house that routes its risk capital through an entity its own state cannot examine will route its data the same way, and its artwork after that.

Brand Safety Used to Be a Phone Call. Now It Is a Search.

A reputation was once protected, and ruined, by a few people who knew each other. AI has changed every part of that: it floods the web with synthetic content, fakes the brand itself, and reads a company, its principals, its vendors and their circle, down to posts, chats and email from years ago, in seconds. Most brands are still using the old controls.

Brand safety no longer means where a logo appears. It means what a company, its principals and their circle have already published, and that includes its vendors, because AI systems often collapse a brand's public expression and its vendors' into the same result. A market will price that before anyone checks who wrote it.

Platform gives brands live shelf data from real orders and audits

DoorDash introduced a platform providing brands with purchase-based signals from consumer orders and audit-based signals from store shelves, per PYMNTS.

ReadingThe steal: shelf data used to cost tens of thousands in mystery shops and syndicated reports. DoorDash monetizes their order and audit infrastructure by selling visibility back to brands — the same brands who already trust them to move product. A CPG brand can now test a shelf position change in one market, see the lift in orders within days, and roll it without guessing. Run a small test: pick one metro, ask DoorDash for the audit data on your category, and map it against your orders for 30 days. The playbook is there.
WatchWatch for brands using this data to negotiate shelf space with traditional retailers by showing DoorDash performance as proof of pull.

Thursday Night Football pitches endemic and non-endemic budgets in one

Amazon positioned Thursday Night Football as a two-pronged pitch to capture advertising dollars from both endemic (media, streaming) and non-endemic (CPG, auto, finance) media buyers, per Digiday.

ReadingThe steal: most sports properties pitch one audience. Amazon splits the pitch — media companies buy on reach and context, consumer brands buy on data and affluence. If you make a physical product and have a media budget, Thursday Night Football's audience skews affluent and engaged. But the real play is simpler: watch which categories Amazon accepts as sponsors in Q4 2026. That tells you which CPG and physical-goods categories they're seeing move during sports viewing. Then copy their media time positioning for your own YouTube or TikTok.
WatchWatch for Amazon to launch a separate advertiser portal for non-endemic brands, segmented from media-buyer portals.

Pulled TikTok brands like Mellow Sleep into home category overhaul

Target launched buzzy TikTok-born brands like Mellow Sleep into its home category this fall, per Digiday.

ReadingThe steal: most retailers scout brands at trade shows or through distributors. Target watches TikTok and lets audience size do the vetting. If a brand is moving units on social, it has two things: demand proof and an audience that will shop the retailer to find it. Do not pitch retailers through traditional channels first. Build proof on TikTok, hit 50K organic followers minimum, and then reach out to the buyer with a link to your sales velocity. Retailers now use social following as a proxy for demand.

Expanded Ulta Beauty partnership to all stores for holiday season

Bath & Body Works scaled its Ulta partnership across all Ulta Beauty locations for the holidays, per Retail Dive.

ReadingThe steal: partner retail partnerships do not need to be permanent. Use a holiday season or a single quarter to test shelf placement in a new channel, measure the velocity, and negotiate year-round based on performance. Bath & Body Works did not ask for every Ulta store at once. They proved it works in a sample, then expanded. If you have a product that could sit in beauty, wellness, or home retail, propose a holiday-only pilot to one regional chain, track the numbers, and use that data to scale.
WatchWatch for Bath & Body Works to launch a standalone beauty line or sub-brand positioned explicitly for Ulta.

Survey: 43 percent of marketers underutilize in-store retail media

IAB and Grocery TV research found that marketers see a full-funnel role for in-store retail media, yet 43 percent say they underutilize the channel, per The Shelby Report.

ReadingThe steal: in-store retail media is the cheapest customer acquisition lever most brands never test. If you have a product in a grocery or pharmacy chain, ask the retailer's media manager about budget to run a shelf-mounted display or digital screen in your category for 30 days. Cost is typically $500-$2K per location per month. Measure foot traffic and ring velocity. Most brands skip this because it feels unglamorous next to digital ads. Do not. The shopper in the aisle already decided to buy from your category; your job is to pull them to your SKU. That is a 30-40 percent higher conversion rate than cold acquisition.

Victoria's Secret
Glossy ↗

using fashion show to push beauty expansion and first skincare tie-up

Victoria's Secret positioned its 2026 fashion show as a platform to promote beauty expansion and its first-ever skincare partnership, per Glossy.

ReadingThe steal: most brands launch new categories in a press release or email. Victoria's Secret amplified theirs through a live event with press, influencers, and audience attention already primed. If you have a brand moment (launch party, pop-up, festival) planned, use it to announce your adjacent category or partnership. Do not save the announcement for a quiet Tuesday. Stack it into your existing calendar of attention. For a smaller brand without a fashion show, this means: do not launch a new SKU on a random Wednesday. Attach it to an event you control — a customer appreciation day, a warehouse sale, a TikTok live. The mechanism is the same.
WatchWatch for Victoria's Secret to open a beauty-only counter or pop-up inside department stores.

Viral lip gloss phone case turned beauty product into wearable accessory

Rhode's lip gloss phone case, launched in 2024, introduced a category where consumers use beauty products as fashion accessories, per Glossy.

ReadingThe steal: physical products that blur category lines (beauty + fashion, wellness + home, food + collectible) expand addressable market because they sell to two audiences. Run a simple test: photograph your product in three contexts: as it is used, as it sits on a shelf, and as it could be worn or displayed. If the third version looks like an accessory or keepsake, explore packaging or form that doubles as fashion. A lip gloss in a case is lip gloss. A lip gloss in a sculptural phone case is jewelry. The margin and repeat rate often justify the format change.
WatchWatch for beauty and wellness brands to launch unboxing-grade accessories that hold or display their core product.
