The Website You Never Think About Was Open Before Breakfast

PHP is the engine under 69% of the websites whose language is known, which means it is under the website in your company you have not thought about in a year: a dealer portal, a company store, the system that sends your email. The flaw had been in it for more than a decade. Researchers working with AI found it in August. The disclosure broke on Monday night, the attacks began before dawn Tuesday, and the patch landed at 10 a.m. Eastern while governments in Europe took their own websites down to wait for it. No company has reported a breach yet, and that is not the comfort it sounds like: the week between "nothing reported" and "the first one reported" is the week the checking happens. If your site is built on a platform that does not run PHP, this does not touch it. If a vendor's does, it may already have. One email, sent today, tells you within the hour which is which.

Shoulder bags and TikTok Shop powered first growth in years

Vera Bradley returned to growth by narrowing focus to small silhouettes and bag charms, then selling through TikTok Shop and social channels, per Modern Retail.

ReadingThe steal: product narrowing precedes channel success. Vera Bradley did not open 10 channels for a sprawling catalog. They identified one silhouette with pull, then put it where the buyer already lives—TikTok Shop. Most brands reverse this: they open channels first, then try to sell everything. Start with the one thing that moves, then stack the right distribution on top of it.
MY STASH TAKEThis is the opposite of the 'we need to be everywhere' panic. A brand that knows what it actually sells can place that product with precision. Vera Bradley stopped trying to convert TikTok into a fashion house and instead let TikTok sell the one bag that TikTok users already wanted. That's the move: inventory clarity, then distribution. Not the other way.
WatchWatch whether Vera Bradley expands bag charms as a separate SKU line or bundles them into the shoulder bag offering.

Día de Muertos event marketing moved brand storytelling beyond ads

Patrón hosted a one-night only comedy show tied to Día de Muertos, per Marketing Dive, embedding the brand in cultural experience rather than paid placement.

ReadingThe steal: a one-night event tied to a real cultural moment does more narrative work than a month of social ads. Patrón did not buy a TikTok takeover. They created a reason for their audience to gather and talk. The audience does the rest. Run a single experiential moment that lands on a date your buyer already celebrates—then let the footage carry it.
MY STASH TAKEBrands keep thinking events are for big players with big budgets. Patrón proved a single night—tied to a moment people already care about—moves more narrative needle than a calendar's worth of content. The play is specificity: pick a date your buyer is already paying attention to, create one gathering, ship the footage. That's the whole move.
WatchWatch whether Patrón ties the comedy show to a limited-edition bottle or merchandise play.

TikTok content series brought younger shoppers into established brand

Banana Republic launched a TikTok content series to court younger customers, per Retail Dive, moving beyond traditional retail advertising into native platform storytelling.

ReadingThe steal: TikTok content series for established brands work when they do not look like ads. Banana Republic understood their target was not going to stop scrolling for a product shot. They made content TikTok users already consume—and threaded the brand through. Test a content series before you buy media. Let the content algorithm carry it for the first 30 days.
MY STASH TAKEBanana Republic knows it's not a TikTok-native brand. So they did not try to be. They created a content series format that TikTok users actually watch—then seeded Banana Republic into it. The win is that a 50-year-old brand can reach Gen Z without pretending to be a TikTok native. Just make content worth watching first.
WatchWatch whether Banana Republic ties the content series to limited drops or discount codes embedded in video captions.

Muppet holiday campaign unified retail push across owned channels

Walmart recreated the world of The Muppet Christmas Carol for its holiday campaign, per Retail Dive, using licensed IP to anchor a unified customer experience across channels.

ReadingThe steal: IP licensing gives you one narrative spine you do not have to invent. Walmart did not create a new holiday story. They licensed one with decades of recall—The Muppets—and rebuilt their entire seasonal push inside that world. Every channel speaks the same language. Test this with a cultural property your audience already loves, then rebuild your email, social, and in-store around it. Coherence is rarer than novelty.
MY STASH TAKEMost brands run a dozen campaign angles and hope one sticks. Walmart unified the whole machine around licensed IP. It's not fancy, but it works: one story, every channel, no confusion. For a brand without in-house creative firepower, this is the move. Find the IP your audience knows, pay for it, build the whole season inside it.

Easy returns policy now central to marketplace competitive lever

TikTok Shop and DoorDash are prioritizing easy returns as a key differentiator, per Modern Retail, recognizing that frictionless refunds drive repeat purchase intent on social marketplaces.

ReadingThe steal: call out your returns policy in the product listing. Most brands bury returns in terms. TikTok Shop made it front-and-center—because a buyer's biggest fear on a social marketplace is 'what if this doesn't fit?' Lead with the answer, not the product spec. Test placing the returns promise above the price.
MY STASH TAKEThis is simple: a buyer's biggest friction on a social marketplace is not price, it's the refund question. TikTok Shop won by making the answer the headline. If you're selling through social channels, put 'free returns' higher in the listing than anything else. It's not exciting, but it closes deals.
WatchWatch whether other social marketplaces adopt returns-first messaging or offer faster refund timelines.

Buyers demand data over storytelling from young designers

Luxury retailers from Net-a-Porter to Moda Operandi report that emerging designers must now lead with sell-through data and customer analytics, not brand narrative alone, per Business of Fashion.

ReadingThe steal: if you're pitching to a retail buyer for the first time, build a one-page data summary before you build a lookbook. Include sell-through rates from your direct channel, repeat-customer percentage, and average order value. Buyers now want proof of demand before they commit inventory. Data is the new credential.
MY STASH TAKEThis is the hygiene shift nobody talks about. Buyers at major retailers are not convinced by a great brand story anymore. They want to see your customer retention rate and sell-through velocity. If you're a young brand, ship your own channel first, get your data clean, then approach retail with proof. The data is your entry ticket now.
WatchWatch whether smaller retailers adopt the same data-first approach, or whether luxury retail's demands remain tier-specific.

Digiday ↗

Interactive subscription tools now differentiator for digital media

The Hill is adding interactive election tools to its subscription offering ahead of 2026 midterms, per Digiday, treating functional tools as retention rather than content.

ReadingThe steal: if you're building a subscription model, separate utility from content. The Hill recognized that readers want tools—not just information. Build one interactive tool subscribers actually need, gate it behind the subscription, then market the tool more than the writing. Test this with a calculator, tracker, or planner your buyer checks weekly.
MY STASH TAKEDigital media is crowded. Content alone will not hold a subscriber. The Hill understood that during election cycles, readers need tools—tracking, analysis, planning. Lock a functional tool behind the paywall, market the tool, not the journalism. This pattern will spread to other verticals. Find the utility your buyer repeats, build it, gate it.
WatchWatch whether The Hill expands interactive tools beyond elections or whether tool-based subscriptions spread to other media properties.
